Quote from: charteroak1 on Yesterday at 10:07:15 AMI think David was the best thing to do for the program as a whole.  While I feel for Scott, the program is always bigger than an individual.  This is also what college wrestling needs as the rivalries with Penn St. and Iowa are going to be quite intense.  I'm interested to see if there are going to be any commitment changes and how the portal shakes out.  I would imagine DJ redshirts this year and wins a Natty in '26

A little birdie told me that we shouldn't feel bad for Coleman Scott. Sometimes you dig your own hole. He was the air apparent, until he wasn't.

Pivoting to DT is a much bigger move than Coleman Scott. Coleman Scott isn't relevant with kids who are graduating now.

Who else is on this plain and at the same age? THIS is the future of NCAA wrestling, for better or for worse.

Dake
Maybe Spencer Lee, but his career internationally isn't on par at the senior level
Burroughs

I'm sure there are a few more that fit the bill, but not quite on the GOAT list.
If you're going of what he's won, then DT is behind Dake, Burroughs, and Snyder for credentials. Then behind Lee at the same point in their careers.

Burroughs - 3x NCAA champ, 7x World/Olympic champ, beat DT at 2014 World team trials
Dake - 4x NCAA champ (beat DT 2x including NCAA finals), 4x World champ, beat DT at three different World/Olympic trials
Snyder - 3x NCAA champ, 4x World/Olympic champ, 1x Junior World champ
Taylor - 2x NCAA champ, 4x World/Olympic champ

Lee - 3x NCAA champ, 2x Junior World champ, 1x Cadet World champ - by the same age DT had never made a national team and wouldn't for another three years, so Spencer very well could be on the path to the same or better international career

So yes DT is big time and he's enormously popular, but it's not as if he's the GOAT.
This is just the top of the list of accomplishments from 2013-2024 for USA.

Compare that to a list from 2000-2012.  What a difference!
If this is supposed to be some kind of GOAT list, I am more impressed with Gable Steveson's career than Spencer Lee and I think Logan Stieber who was a 4-time NCAA champ should be on it if Lee makes the list.

The AD at UW-Green Bay is a former wrestler. I have mentioned to him more than once about adding men's and women's wrestling. I don't think that will happen. The new president at Marian is my former superintendent. He is very open to the idea of adding men's and women's wrestling.

Thank you for the insight.  It's exciting to here about these programs competing in the upper echelon of their divisions.

We have a very strong D3 presence in our state, but only one D1 and D2 program, as well as no NAIA or NJCAA programs. On the recent podcast with Ben a question was brought up about new college programs potentially starting up in the state.  I believe he mentioned starting a NAIA program at a small school in Fond du lac (I assume he was referring to Marian?).  Are there any serious discussions in the works about new programs being started?  With so many of our wrestlers leaving the state it would be great to have more options for them to pick from in Wisconsin.

Quote from: bjb0501 on Yesterday at 03:59:37 PMSince this forum is titled "Wisconsin Collegiate Wrestling - All Divisions"; I thought I'd try to bring a more positive discussion to the forum.  Wisconsin has several programs that are doing quite well in their respective divisions (Parkside, La Crosse & Eau Claire come to mind).  I'd love to hear more about the positive direction those programs are heading, their projected line-ups and incoming recruits instead of the same discussion about the Badgers.  I believe some of these programs may have national title aspirations. Honestly it's harder to find information about those divisions, so any insight would be appreciated.

Nice post!

Parkside is for sure top 10 if not higher team next year. I am pretty sure they could be working to top 5 pretty easily. in D2 Central Oklahoma has rallied the team.and is going to be hard to unseen. They have the same donor that is making news for the okie state program. Richison was a former central.oklahome wrestler.

LA Crosse put together a very nice ncaa tournament even leading in points very late. Malechek is one of the best D3 coaches out there along with Eau Claire Tim Fador. Eau claire finished very high also. Favor has turned that program around in a very short period of time. Favor and Malechek are very visible and are doing great jobs.

Nick Becker is still young but has gave the parkside program a shot in the arm. I want to say Parkside returns all of their national quailifiers for next year! Parkside biggest hurdle is in their conference for wrestling 4 of the top 10 teams are in the co ference and regions! In 2025 Parkside region quailifier is in sioux falls south dakota and nationals in indy!

Is D3 again in LA Crosse next year?

Also a ton of state wrestlers on many D2 and D3 teams. 26 Dq through D3 AA from Wisconsin this past year!

D3 is in Rhode Island next year.   >:(

I don't think David Taylor is the GOAT. I didn't know what to call the elite list.

Snyder for sure is on that upper tier. Wonder if he'd want to get into coaching.

Quote from: wrestler_73 on Yesterday at 02:48:20 PMIt is a bold decision because they had an OKlahoma State superstar waiting to be the next head coach.  They made a different decision and hired someone that does not have any coaching experience.  Askren would be the same type of bold decision.  The Askren answer in any form will bring in recruits, NIL money, and perhaps bring back wrestlers currently in other programs.  Nothing is for sure...but our current plan ends up in the same place for the last 30+ years.
So it's a bold decision because they didn't hire an alumni?
So being an alumni should be a criteria for hiring the next coach at a university? If this is the case, then we can forget about hiring Askren as he's not an alumni.
How about Alex Dieringer, Chris Pendleton or Mark branch aren't they Alumni? Were they not superstars? Was it a bold decision to pass on those guys?
Everyone in the wrestling world is calling this a no-brainer it has nothing to do with being an alumni and everything to do with getting the best coaching staff available which they are doing.

I believe another very wealthy donor is also on board for the cowboys. Not sure if there is 2 but the donation is north of 40 million for the program.

Can the the badgers find 40 million dollar donor?

DT has been on the senior level for the past 8 years getting some of the best coaching around. DT has also been the individual workout partner for several current and past PSU wrestlers. I think he has a good grasp at coaching at an elite level.

Bring in Askren, shock the college wrestling nation. Why not do something to jump start the program. I am cool with that!
