Quote from: BadgerOne on April 24, 2024, 06:50:22 PMPretty interesting podcast.  Ben talks Bono and UW about half way into podcast.  For all who blame Ben for the state of UW's wrestling program, its worth a listen. He also talks about NIL. He also talks about Barry.

I listened to that particular part of the interview and while some pointed questions were asked, I didn't hear a particularly enlightening response from Ben. For example, "why did you leave the UW RTC?" The response was that "Bono crossed and unspecified line and so I quit. Subsequently, he says "Bono apologized for the (unspecified) transgression and I forgave him." I'm sorry, but ??????????.

And too, when asked why he drives kids away from the UW his response was basically "If a kid wants to go to the UW it is fine with me - but it is the kid's choice." I think that's a fine position, but it really doesn't address the accusation that he has been recommending that these kids go elsewhere (assuming they are undecided) - he really kind of danced-around that answer.

All that said, I think it is great of Ben to pony-up for an interview like this, even if some answers aren't really answers. He has no real responsibility to be transparent on his opinions/experiences with the UW wrestling scene.

No student athlete can recieve any type of compensation based on their affiliation to school or sport. So, essentially, no. I am all for the NIL. If the WIAA plays it right the students can only benefit from it. If the argument of "only the good kids will get it" comes up, I say, then get better and you'll get a deal. Just because one athlete isn't as good, doesn't mean the others that are that good, shouldn't be able to reap the rewards.

Quote from: Wisconsin Wrestling Fan on April 24, 2024, 08:29:30 AMFor those that don't have Rokfin, what were the key points Coach Bono Made?

Seth Gross will be at 61kg for World Team Trials in September and "give it one last go."

Amos got checked out and doctor's pleased with results and back on mat soon.

Taking Nilo, Condon and Fugitt to U20s this weekend.

Julian George wrestling for Puerto Rico at some qualifier out of country (don't remember where he said).

Nicolar and others (lineup no solidified yet) will be wrestling at U23 world team trials in June in Ohio (if that's what it's still called)

The guy that won the ATV thru the raffle donated it back and they are gonna raffle it off again thru some partnership with the football team (wasn't expanded on).

Please give us $20k in May towards the RTC.

He hates Ben Askren.  (That part I made up)

Quote from: Ghetto on April 20, 2024, 10:01:15 PMIt's the dang apocalypse.

High school kids getting NIL money. I pray there's some semblance of order to it all.
Most states have had it before the NCAA brought it in.
It typically only end up to the top Nike athletes in basketball and football.
Tennis and Golf seem to benefit as well, but in wrestling it more uncommon outside of Basset.

I now remember someone telling me about this...

NIL, though a great idea in theory, has wreaked havoc on college athletics. At least in Wisconsin (for HS kids), if they kept things the same as the status quo, a student couldn't transfer after his freshman year without losing a year of eligibility. Right? I seem to remember that once you set foot in a school during your sophomore year, you would have to physically move districts to be eligible to compete.

Correct.  Transfer rules still apply.
I don't know how things go in Wisconsin but in MN the transfer rule means very little.  It is easily gotten around and the MSHSL has no interest in investigating anything.

I don't know how things are right now in this moment, but we had a kid a few years ago that went to school one day as a sophomore at his former school and had to wrestle JV the entire year, despite moving away from an extremely difficult home situation. Appeals were not granted. So maybe the WIAA rule still has some teeth.

Quote from: charteroak1 on April 24, 2024, 08:37:08 AMSo what is happening with Frayer?  His current title is AHC.

Good question. Maybe Tanelli just wanted out of Columbia? IDK. Weird to take a step backwards in position. That said, Blacksburg is a great place and VT has a beautiful campus. Not the worst place to land.
