You guys still say you want Ben.  What did Ben do when he finished high school?  Did he stay in Wisconsin or leave?  He doesn't have any loyality for the Badgers. Only thinks what's best for him.  He have his chance, but quit.

To basically circumvent current rules in place that protect coaches and student/athletes from the "more, more, more" mentality and say that Greco & Freestyle is different , I believe is irresponsible.

As a high school coach of 30 years that had wrestlers consistently qualify and place at the State tournament, I have a different view regarding that some coaches vote against the idea of having more contact time  - and it's not because they "don't want to look bad" compared to neighboring communities.

I contend that maybe some coaches are capable of getting great results in the time that they work with their wrestlers from Nov - March.  And in reality, if you're not able to move the needle with regard to in-season success during that time, then maybe you need to look in the mirror and reassess what and how you're doing business.

I also believe there is value, which I saw through the years with some of our wrestlers, in the Greco/Freestyle wrestling. However , instead of being in the practice room in the Spring/Summer, rely on your in-home club to deliver the coaching, practice , strategy, etc.... This allows your high school coaching staff to get the natural time-away break from their athletes as well as the athletes getting a break from their coaches. That's a good thing!!  And, the kids are still getting exposure to the positive benefits of what Greco/Freestyle wrestling offers.

More time together with their high school athletes is a slippery slope.  I believe it puts undo pressure on the athlete to do "more" and that's not a good thing.  It's ok to tell kids to take a break, be a kid, enjoy/experience other things than wrestling.  We'll get together again in Nov. and work hard through March!

Again , this is my view, but it's based on high-level success through the years. And, success was achieved through not only hard work in the practice room, but also by teaching our athletes the value of being a good team mate, good student, being ethical , not taking short cuts, etc...core value type of things.  You can do all of this from Nov - March and have your wrestlers reap the benefits..."more" time together is not the simple answer nor is it the "right" answer from where I stand.

Respectfully,

Success without "more"

Just want to clarify, ~73 of the 84 Division 1 state medalists this last year have Track profiles showing club affiliations and off-season work.

You say if you aren't able to move the needle from Nov-March maybe the coach should look in the mirror.

You also say your in-home club of MS and youth coaches take over and work with your high school team outside of Nov-March?

So which is it?

Kids obviously benefit from putting in work outside the season and it shows based on the medal results.  The availability and affordability of private wrestling clubs or having a large experienced MS and youth coaching staff for an in-home club willing to work with the high schoolers on top of their other positions(but not during the high school season) are not available in every community.

Updating the contact rules specifically around optional workouts helps provide more opportunities for the kids and families that are interested.

Quote from: WrestlerSB80 on Yesterday at 11:02:02 AMBen Askren, Nick Becker and get Trevor Brandvold. Ben head coach and Nick, Trevor assistant.

Didn't Ben say he wanted Trevor at head coach.

Right now I doubt Trevor would ever move from Minnesota to be an assistant. Trevor is a way proven college coach and maybe one of the best heavy guy coach in the nation, PERIOD.

Sorry to all the Ben lovers but Trevor is a way better college coach at this point of their very respected and storied careers!

I'd be ok with Trevor. I'll take whoever, just want Wisconsin a place where in state kids want to wrestle for.

We are trying to host a home dual vs a school that has Varsity, JV, Girls and also host a dual between youth clubs at the same time. 3 mats going at once, Varsity on one mat, JV/Girls on second mat and youth clubs having their own dual on the third mat. Could be a fun event for both communities.

We are looking at January 7th or 8th.

If interested, please email: gartnerr@wilmoths.k12.wi.us

MTA,

Our high school coaches did not have any contact with athletes as other staff such as MS and our youth coaches provided the instruction - none of these coaches work with our high school athletes in-season.

Whitnall/Greendale is hosting a tri or quad on Wed 12/4/24 and looking for 1 or 2 more teams. So far Westosha Central is also attending. We will have JV and Girls matches with 3 mats.  Please contact Tom Maloney at tmaloney@whitnall.com if interested.

Alex would be a great pick up.  If I recall Eric was a finance major or something in that area, so I would imagine he's going to be making a few more that an Asst.  I could also see Eric helping out one of the clubs in that area, if not creating his own.  I think Trent's ship has sailed and he'll be in Minny for a while.

I'd like to see some new blood honestly in that position.
