still a couple of good duals on BTN tonight. Michigan/Nebraska should be interesting and if we get Gomez vs Ridge Lovett that should be fun. After that we have Iowa/PSU from Carver. There is a possibility of PSU winning all 10 which would be a nice follow up to Iowa losing to Michigan last weekend!

wrestle03

Gomez gets absolutely dominated by Lovett.........was never remotely in the match.

Penn State destroys Iowa - Mitchell Messenbrink continues to awe me.  The kid just doesnt stop bringing the attack.

It is fun watching these wonderful dual meets.  However I must admit it's a little melancholy at times as these teams are so complete and it only highlights how far the UW program needs to go to get to these levels.

Yes, probably about $2,000,000 to go.

Leg Turk, they'll never get to 2 million when they cant get to 2 thousand dollars.  NIL has ruined college sports.  The rich just get richer - I wonder how many D1 programs will still be alive in another 5 or 10 years?

Well, time for UW to pony up then.  They have the money make no mistake about it.

Iowa did about as good as tOSU and Michigan.  Figured Woods and Caliendo would/could win.  The other two wins were expected.  For the supposed second best it was no where near good enough. Kinda shocking Nebraska took it to Michigan. Thought that would be much closer.  The Nebraska Penn St. dual will be interesting.

If they go chalk, Nebraska may not win a match, Nebraska favored at 149, maybe 184 but those are also winnable by PSU.

There is a clear #1, they have no holes.

It would be an upset for PSU to win 149. Kasak wrestled poorly against Iowa though and will bounce back. 184 is close to a tossup.

Nebraska has a decent chance at 125. Vane Dee just had a big win at 133 but Nagao should control him. Robb seems to be a notch below now at 157 and Taylor just beat Amine at 165, but Mesenbrink dominated Amine.

I am predicting 30-6 PSU. Home mat advantage will be big obviously!

Absolutely.  PSU wins that dual no doubt.  Comparing how Nebraska will do vs. how tOSU, Michigan, and Iowa did will tell  how everyone stacks up vs PSU.  So far, about the same.  Everyone has 2 or 3 wins and some give up less bonus than the others.  Two matches that would probably be viewed as upsets but are closer are 141 and 157 if Nebraska wins them.  Hardy is a great competitor and Bartlett is really good but he can lose.  Haines is a beast.  Robb is a tuff dude he just seems a little off but he could win.

Haines is starting to remind of other PSU studs (Starocci, Brooks, Nolf, Retherford etc...). Kind of beatable as a freshmen but they start to separate themselves each year after that and kind of start to be a lock for a title.

Mesenbrink might be the next.  If he could get passed Carr and O'Toole he could have a legacy.  He hasn't yet wrestled that caliber of wrestler collegiately.  O'Toole is insanely good.

I am very curious to see what Mesenbrink can do against DJ, O'Toole and Carr and to some extent Ramirez, Olejnik and Hall. His pace has been too much to handle for everyone he has matched up against but you can be shooting into the fire with those top 3 and I wonder if he will need to alter his strategy.

For several straight years this weight class has been ridiculous and is again this year. I would certainly expect to see senior world and Olympic medals coming out of this group down the line but probably not his year. Going to be incredibly difficult just to make it to wrestle Dake in final X. If Starocci can really make 74kg that group that would battle it out for a spot against Dake at this years trials would contain Burroughs, Nolf, Starocci, O'Toole, Carr, Mesenbrink, Quincy Monday, Alex Marinelli, and Alex Faucundo. Could also include James Green and Meyer Shapiro who qualified at 70kg and can choose to go up or down. Same for the 157 lb NCAA champion if they cannot go down to 65kg they would be at 74kg so you could likely add Levi Haines to this group. Are you kidding me!

Yes - the UW has cash and donors may be willing to give, but why in the world should they allocate it to the UW wrestling program? There are many other campus organizations who are equally starved for funding and can make similar, if not stronger claims for the funding. So, it's not really about the school having money as it is about an outside donor having the funds and directing them to the wrestling program. Unless something like that happens (or until our NIL program gains traction for the non-revenue sports) the trajectory of non-revenue sports at the UW is pretty clear...and a similar fate awaits schools who don't allocate additional funding to those particular sports.
