Penn State destroys Iowa - Mitchell Messenbrink continues to awe me.  The kid just doesnt stop bringing the attack.

Quote from: bigoil on February 12, 2024, 09:57:08 AMIf they go chalk, Nebraska may not win a match, Nebraska favored at 149, maybe 184 but those are also winnable by PSU.

There is a clear #1, they have no holes.

Absolutely.  PSU wins that dual no doubt.  Comparing how Nebraska will do vs. how tOSU, Michigan, and Iowa did will tell  how everyone stacks up vs PSU.  So far, about the same.  Everyone has 2 or 3 wins and some give up less bonus than the others.  Two matches that would probably be viewed as upsets but are closer are 141 and 157 if Nebraska wins them.  Hardy is a great competitor and Bartlett is really good but he can lose.  Haines is a beast.  Robb is a tuff dude he just seems a little off but he could win.

Haines is starting to remind of other PSU studs (Starocci, Brooks, Nolf, Retherford etc...). Kind of beatable as a freshmen but they start to separate themselves each year after that and kind of start to be a lock for a title.

Mesenbrink might be the next.  If he could get passed Carr and O'Toole he could have a legacy.  He hasn't yet wrestled that caliber of wrestler collegiately.  O'Toole is insanely good.

Might be? I think he's clearly the next guy. Obviously, that weight class is so incredibly talented at the top, he may not win it this year, but who is gonna stop him the next 3?
And I think he can get through it this year. I think he's clearly ahead of where Haines was last year. He takes that old Iowa style and meshes it perfectly with the PSU style. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't just win the Hodge, but win it a couple of times.

What's wild to me is how PSU is STILL getting elite recruits at these weights this year, and next year. I think they just picked up a '60 pounder who's the 8th-ranked P4P recruit(Henckel) on TOP of PJ Duke, Sealey, and so many others. And they still have Facundo, a Freshman who had a great season last year taking an Olympic RS.

That RTC...it's so deep it's ridiculous. I'm curious if a kid like Messenbrink gets to roll with Dake or Retherford or any of those Sr level athletes who are competing, in many cases, against other members of their own club for sports on the National team? IF you're Wrestling Starroci on top of Dake, Zain, Nolf every day...is that even Iron sharpening Iron? It's more like Diamonds sharpening Diamonds!
