Was listening to this interview with the head coach from Rider University and he said UW is going from 9.9 to 5 scholarships. Was that already discussed somewhere this off season?  Haven't heard this prior to this interview, but that certainly changes things for the worse if true!

Clip is around the 53 minute mark.

Also interesting was the Power 4 schools are forced to follow the roster reduction cap to 30 wrestlers only, but mid major schools are not forced and have the option to have an unlimited roster.  Either way it sounds like most schools will have less scholarships to hand out in the future....especially if a school has a football team that it is trying to support.

This has been talked about over the winter and has been poo poo by many. Let's face it the wrestling team isn't making much money if any and now that these sports are business, cuts will come at some form or nature.

We have to face it that the the college landscaping is changing especially for olympic sports or non revenue sports. I am hoping for the best for the Badgers and all schools but with federal money getting limited for colleges it is any ones guess what is going to happen.

UW is still at 9.9 scholarships.

confirmed!

Good to hear! Man...I'm sure Coach Bono & Co will be in touch with the Rider coach to not say stuff like this in the future!

Sounds as if 9 schools are going to 15 scholarships and minnesota is at 10 to 12 for the upcoming year.

So even if the Badgers stay at 9.9 they are falling between most of the big ten in scholarships.

Sounds like it's time to put Rider on the schedule again this year!

149 AA Alvarez, 157 Washleski and 184 Dean have all transferred from Rider. I see 141 Griffin transferred to Rider.

149 Zargo and 285 Amos return for UW.

165 Goebel came on at the end of the season. George returns from injury.

174 Condon should step up this year.

197 Ingham should be strong at 197 based on his freshman year

All of the starters return for the Badgers and a few redshirts.

I like our chances in a dual against Rider.

For what it is worth WS has it 28-3 Badgers with the only loss coming at 141. A few toss ups that could go the other way but Kirk I am with you and like our chances

How relevant are scholarships now in a world of NIL and AD money?

If you have NIL funds, you basically have unlimited scholarships, don't you?
thats the bottom line
On Wisconsin!

It would still be nice if the college kicked in some money.

If most of the schools are kicking in for 15 scholarships and the Badger stay at 9 that means more money to raise, I would think!

With the House settlement last week the landscape changes again.  Universities can directly pay atheletes.  The money at UW will go to Football, Mens Basketball, Mens and Womens Hockey and Volleyball.  NIL will be regulated under the new ruling and all deals are suppose to be reviewed for merit.  Congress will more than likely step in to create framework to stop the influx of lawsuits.  How will this beneifit wrestling...it won't.

The core element of the House v. NCAA settlement is that the NCAA will pay out $2.576 billion to the settlement damages classes and also begin a 10-year term in which Division I schools will be able to directly pay student-athletes with a pool (read: salary cap) of up to 22 percent of the Power Five conference schools' average athletic revenues each year. That 22 percent figure is estimated to be approximately $20.5 million in 2025-26.

Any payments from that pool would be on top of existing benefits. So, student-athletes will still be able to receive full-tuition scholarships, free room and board, grants, academic support, nutrition, medical resources, etc. They'll also still be able to get paid via NIL deals

Under the settlement, the NCAA is partnering with auditing giant Deloitte on enforcement of a new NIL policy that would track and evaluate all deals valued over $600. According to an NCAA statement, "The new enforcement entity will use the system to help it evaluate whether these deals are within a reasonable range of compensation and made with the purpose of using a student-athlete's NIL to advance a valid business purpose, as outlined in the proposed settlement."

Merely having an opinion doesn't necessarily make it a good one

The new "rules" set a $20.5 million dollar cap on what schools can spend to pay athletes outside of scholarships.  This money comes directly from school profits.  95% of this will go to football and basketball.  0% will go to wrestling.  Funny part is that most athletic departments are NOT profitable.  May 40 D1 schools (maybe less) will have the money to actually pay out $20.5 million each year.  UW is one of the more profitable athletic departments.

The NIL money can be in addition to this.  It is going to be like high school where each sport is going to need to form it's own booster club.

In regards to the $20.5 million the next lawsuit will be Title IX.  Will the university be forced to have to spend 1/2 the money on women's sports.
Of Course, this is only my opinion and no one elses!
