to Iowa, more then interesting

Littledog2518

I'm assuming lots more money.

Littledog2518 - I would agree, Iowa likely paid him a nice NIL paycheck.  Good for Endene.

This NIL money is very interesting, especially as the WIAA is likely to approve it. Will fundraisers now go to getting or keeping athletes vs upgrading equipment and facilities? How will this affect open-enrollment? We have some schools with millions of dollars in endowment money. How does that factor in even more than it does already?
If I'm a quarterback and the main reason I'm getting big numbers is due to the dedication of my 0-line, and surehandedness of my receivers, what do they get?
If I'm a wrestler and I've got two teammates and a coach that push me each day on the mat to become my best, what do they get?
As we get deeper in, it certainly could cause more problems that in solves.

From my understanding of the proposed WIAA rules for NIL, there will be restrictions that prevent this from happening. The proposed rules are below:

The compensation is not provided by the school or persons associated with school as an inducement to
attend a particular school ("recruiting") or to remain enrolled at a particular school.
Note: Definition of Persons Associated With School include, but are not limited to; current or former
coaches, current or former athletes, parent(s)/guardian(s)/caregiver of current or former student/athletes (exception of one's own parent) , booster club members, alumni, spouses or relatives of coaches, teachers and other employees, coaches who become employed, active applicants for coaching positions, and persons who are employed by companies or organizations that have donated monetarily, athletic supplies, equipment or apparel to that school.

 ;) yeah as if.

And back to the topic of the OP:

Endene's credentials and the history of people similarly credentialed upon moving to Division I suggests little more than qualifying for the DI national tournament. He might be the exception, or he might just add to the statistics. Not sure what to make of it - a bit of a reach? Or do they see something that others have missed?

A year ago when he briefly enrolled at the UW it was met with only mild interest. I just don't know what to make of him at this point.
Merely having an opinion doesn't necessarily make it a good one

Npope, Endene has already proven himself against D1 competition in freestyle.  It'll be interesting to see how he does this week again the likes of Kyle Snyder.  My opinion is that he's a tad small for 97KG in freestyle and 197 lb in college.  I always thought he'd do much better at one weight class down.

I was on another forum and someone stated that Wisconsin now has 5.5 wrestling scholarships.  Does anyone know if this is true or was this discussed on last weeks call in?

howavi

No changes to scholarships have taken place, false rumor.

Coach made mention of something last week that last year we only had something less than 9.9 scholarships in the starting lineup, with Joe, Amos, George, Wyatt not in the line up... perhaps that is what someone thought they heard. To be clear, UW Wrestling continues to offer 9.9 scholarships.

I know this may never be answered but I am really curious on how/who the 9.9 scholarships are divided up?
This does not include NIL just the scholarships.

howavi

It varies and rules have changed. In the past you could give .3 scholarship and do something like 0,0,0,.5,1.0 (1.5/5 = .3). Now you have to give a minimum per year, which changed a couple of years ago, so even among the team you may have a variance because of the start dates. Going forward, it is likely pretty discernable who is getting scholarship $ vs who is not in a given year. That said, NIL is part of the equation pretty much everywhere.

So the way I read this is that now you have to give every athlete a minimum per year?

if you give out a scholarship yes (and I believe it is .2 minimum), you can certainly still have walkons...

DocWrestling

The old rule is that you could give out 9.9 scholarships and divide it up and seems that UW has stuck to that.  The new rule is that you can give out up to 30 full ride scholarships.  I highly doubt any teams are doing that but some could be giving out more than 9.9 and some less.
Of Course, this is only my opinion and no one elses!
