How will the new roster rules, max roster is now 30 with all 30 roster spots being eligible for athletic scholarships, affect the transfer portal as well as available roster spots for new recruits?

Glancing at current rosters and committed recruits, isn't there a surplus of wrestlers at the moment in D1 and D2?  Will this create a huge transfer of wrestlers from D1 to D2, as well as from D2 to D3 and NAIA?  I assume D3 can still have unlimited roster sizes, since they do not have athletic scholarships?

I hear Wisconsin is currently using a roster limit of 28 for wrestling.

NAIA does not follow NCAA rules - they have their own rules. I don't think D2 or d3 have roster limits.

Unless they are freshman and gray shirting, I would think many D1 wrestlers will be in the transfer portal.

No limits yet inlower divisions. Yes pretty amazing what conversations are out there! Though it is not like D2 schools are loaded with money either. Roster spots yes, money not as much.

We are entering a strange time for many college sports.

If the Badgers are going to have a roster limit of 28, there will be kids forced to transfer out with the amount of new recruits we have coming in.  That also will make it tough to bring in any transfers.  I assume these transfers will start making announcements sooner than later, since there is no reason to wait and the new roster rules have been established for a while now.  Basically every team needs to make these adjustments, should be a very busy offseason for every program and I would think the changes start being announced soon.

So check this out. Incoming classes are looking outstanding. And this doesn't even include anyone the Badgers pick up via the portal.

2025-

Tyson Waughtel- IL (most wins in IL history)

Roen Carey- mineral point (state champ

Devin Bobzien- Milton (state champ)

Caleb Dennee- marshfield (ranked nationally)

Tyson Imhoff- Iowa grant- state champ

Peter  Tomasevic - Freedom (state champ)

Collin McDowell- Arrowhead (state 3rd)

2026-

Hunter Stevens - Mount Horeb
Eli Leonard - Mount Horeb

I know a lot of posters like to point out that the Badgers miss out on home talent but this sure shows that isn't the case with all these studs.

What's your guess for their weight classes at the next level?

If we assume the outgoing equals the incoming and the roster limits are passed.  Just with these teams 48 kids are looking for a new home.  The portal should be full this year, so what does that do to class of 2026 HS kids.

I personally think that is screws the future classes. Schools will take more of a chance on a proven wrestler vs a high school wrestler. The portal could be flooded and to be honest I am not sure how much money is going to be around outside the top 5 schools. Many schools are tightening the budgets up so.....

Badgers have 28 currently and there were five to six that walked on sr night.

Whats wrong with going D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO for a year and prove you can wrestle at a level above HS...Coaches will find you in the portal if youve had success-this is already happening in NCAA baseball, basketball, football.
The harder you work, the harder it is to lose.

WrestleStat is a great website to find out roster information and see which incoming recruits are linked to the team.
