Quote from: wrestler_73 on November 26, 2024, 11:01:53 AMHow would they do this year in the WIAC? I bet they would struggle to be top 3.  That should be embarrassing. The answer is right in front of the decision makers.  Becker, Malacek, or Fader would bring in a top tier assistant and find a way to keep the Wisconsin talent and build a championship program...not whine and cry about NIL and the transfer portal and the current state of the program.

While those 3 coaches have done excellent jobs, would they attract top talent from across the nation? I think they would attract local and rural talent from around the area, they would have to have an Askren on staff or someone like that and then train them to take over the reigns at some point.

There is a ton of talented D1 wrestlers coaching in D2. I asked one if he thought he would ever move to D1. He said he wasn't an all American at D1 and most D1 programs are not going to take a non AA to coach D1 unless he was a world/Olympic team member like tervel.

I mean...with respect, you spoke with one coach who shared their anecdotal opinion on why they wouldn't get a D1 Job.

A guy like Becker, if he wants to be a D1 Coach...he'll become a D1 coach. He was a 3X undefeated National Champ who I don't think made a real long run on the Sr Circuit, but he certainly showed he belonged when he did.

I know the one year he lost a tough 6-4 match in the Semis vs Mark Hall...a guy who went 1/2/2 and very likely wins his 2nd title. This match was right before his Sr year when he had an 80% bonus rate and lost a single match to Kemerer from Iowa(who he'd beaten before an after).

I'm sure there's a MUCH longer list, but take Mark Manning. His career followed a similar trajectory...but he wasn't as successful as Becker. Manning came to Neb-Omaha, went something like 120-15 in his ensuing 3 years and won 2 titles.
Becker was something like 90-0 in his 3 years and dominated the D2 Nationals.

You'd immediately get more in-state talent and I think Becker can develop guys and...again, go back to Askren. If you want a guy who has Askren's respect, he's already used Becker as an example.

I don't think his lack of a D1 AA Status is going to stop him from coaching at the D1 level...if that was even something he was interested in. It seems as though he's in a good situation as it stands with family around him at Parkside.

Spoke with more than one in all due respect.

Sure you have out liers in college coaching but outside Manning and looknat his age when it was more common but in the current day it will have to be some one real special.

If you go back I have stated many times that I think Becker is a GREAT coach and love what he is doing at Parkside. Getting state kids another scholarship opportunity in the state is incredible and building a great team! Love seeing them compete!

Sure he would be great for Wisconsin kids but I just don't know nationally if he would be a draw.

Take a look at St Cloud and Central OK coaches that have built national championship teams over and over for decades and very little interest in any for them to get a d1 opportunity. Becker is young and learning but has no where near thier resume at this point.

I hope Becker gets every opportunity but I just don't see it happening.

Have you asked him or Doug? I think you are right because I have asked and got nothing back.

Ok...well, we're talking about rebuilding the program, so he doesn't need to be going out and trying to get Bo Bassett and Jax Forrest at this point, he needs to be trying to get guys like Millard and Wolbert(no disrespect meant to either, I simply mean in-state talent...I'd have said the same about Sinclair, O'Toole or whoever). And if you go back a year or two, you could build a title contender with in-state kids.

Talking about recruiting Nationally at THIS point is like complaining the starving aren't getting Filet Mignon.

If you had...Mesenbrink, Connor and Cole Mirasola, Sinclair, Stoeffel, throw in Rivera, Wolbert, Millard...you'd have the core of a team that could at least compete, build up an RTC...and then you're going to start attracting money, growing the RTC and you can start talking about recruiting Nationally.

McIntosh has so little Influence on:

-growing the RTC.
-developing the wrestlers
-recruiting the wrestlers.
-losing to Ohio and Rider.
-promoting the team (how's those Jump around Monday going?).
-building relationships with in and out of state HS teams and clubs
-building a team culture where kids want to stay no matter the external situations (find the recent UNI comments on how he keeps AA athletes with little NIL).

Only fault I give McIntosh is giving Bono over $250,000 a year to tear down a decent team.

Excuses are for wussies....it starts and ends with the coach.

Very true in recruiting the state kids. Wisconsin has had a nice run of in state talent to build a solid team for sure.

Ben askren has once said he could build a national contender just recruiting the I-94 corridor from Chicago to st cloud. I think that is what he said.

Ok, i will go with you in having Becker as the coach, who would you then have as the assistant.

There are some young men from Wisconsin that are graduating this year that might be interested in coaching.

Vir Fortis

I don't know who the assistants would be. Whoever Becker knows and has a good history with. I'd imagine there are a lot of guys who'd like to be Head Coaches one day and there are a limited number of assistant coaching jobs available.

Try and bring Branvold home or keep Cass where he is. Both are good for the big guys...what's Barnett doing? He was a tough kid who you could bring back. Micic is a guy who could be a great assistant coach, he's technical and I believe he still has Sr Level aspirations, but I'm just pulling this totally out of thin air.

I'm looking at 3 things.
-A younger guy who has ties to the state
-A guy who has had success wrestling
-Someone who has good relationships in the State.

I don't know of many people who are more well-liked in the State of Wisconsin than the Becker family but I don't know Nick well enough to begin to guess who HE knows well enough that he'd want to coach with.

I think you'd have a whole lot of new energy in the program and then...you'd have to start getting results. It wouldn't be a quick turnaround but...I really don't see a sustainable path forward. I did a couple years ago and when I did, I said as much. When Hamiti was a Freshmen/Soph, you had Barnett, you have some really good recruits coming in.

Bono was a good coach in his past, so I don't think he just forgot how to coach, but it just hasn't worked out here. That's it.

Tuco

Cross Barnett off the list. He is a Financial Advisor with a great insurance company in Appleton.

MNR

Off topic, but if Barnett really wants to be a good fiduciary financial advisor, he should get out of the insurance industry while he's young.  No one should mix investing with insurance unless they like paying egregious fees.

I will tell my millionaire friend who has successfully combined what you just said won't work.  Great financial advisors know tax laws, investment opportunities, and insurance needs.  Nice try.

Oh, the insurance salesmen that sell annuities to investors in the accumulation phase do make a great commission. Their customers, not so much.
And having a millionaire friend really isn't a great humble brag nowadays when almost 1 in 5 households are millionaires.

I personally would fall in that 1 in 5 category, 20 percent category.  But its been the result of hard work and investing.  No, I'm not interested in giving one red cent as a donation to lil man Bono who has single handedly ruined Wisconsin Badger wrestling.  How's this guy sleep at night?  Can't recruit, can't develop and ZERO people skills.  Keep on cashing your yearly 250 grand check while you can - you will be out of a job when this program is cut in the next two years.  Mark my words on that.
