As reported over on the Intermat Forum, Austin Gomez is headed over to Michigan for his remaining year of eligibility.

Not surprising unfortunately. Michigan has assembled quite the roster of high end transfers. I am sure much has to do with the relationship with Cliff Keen and the NIL. Current transfers on the roster DeAugustino, Cannon, Griffith and L Davison. Add that to previous transfers Matt Finesilver, Suriano, Micic and Brucki and you have a pretty impressive list.

I will add that I am super excited for Austin if the news is true.  I loved watching him wrestle for the Badgers and will support him no matter where he wrestles.  His addition to the Michigan roster will have a huge impact.

The landscape of college athletics has changed dramatically in the last few years and I really hope the Badgers can figure out a way to compete in the current environment.  Without the ability to create huge NIL opportunities or fund a top level RTC, the path is going to be tough for a lot of schools.

On Wisconsin!

It would be stupid to think that NIL had nothing to do with this however I would say that's not the only reason he's leaving Wisconsin and not returning. I'm sure there are two or so reasons he didn't love... either way the fans loved him and he was awesome for us when he was healthy. Best of luck to him at michigan it'll be interesting to see how that lineup shakes up now. That's a decent swing at 149 against penn st in a dual too

Were fans tough on him? I didn't get that impression.

I think the two primary reasons are because he's was going to their RTC and they likely just gave him an NIL deal to also Wrestle for them. So I think it was just convenient and they had money to offer. It's likely that simple(unless he suggests otherwise). I think it really sucks for Wisconsin, but good for Gomez. I'd like to see him get that NC.

The weight is wide open with Yianni gone. Him, Sasso, Van Ness, Johnson(I haven't kept up on his situation or if his suspension will be reduced, but he could contend).

I wish him all these best, especially when it comes to health, Iowa and Penn State.  He was incredibly fun to watch and I think he brought a swag to this team.

That being said, I must admit it will sting a bit watching him in March, especially if he reaches the top of the podium.  I think I said about the same thing when Wick left.  Go Badgers!

I would.be surprised if sasso wrestled.this year. I could.be wrong but he has some life changing injuries to over come!

Go Austin! Hit it out of the park!

Not cool that Wisconsin lost him.
Great for Austin as it should be a great opportunity to showcase his talent and compete for a national championship.

I cant blame Gomez one bit as this move makes alot of sense.  He's already training there and likely received a decent NIL deal.  Second, he actually has some high level practive partners in the room which is something that the Badgers do not have.

It would seem Austin improved quite a bit and if not for an injury, may have been a national champion, since he handled the champion quite well in their match up. His practice partners must have helped that improvement, right?

Bigoil, I cannot argue with your point as it is valid.  He may have very well been top 3, if not better if not for injury.
But I dont think we can disagree that Michigan has quite a bit more talent in the room.

I think as a team that is pretty clear but not really at his weight. Lewan is one difference, yes. I'd argue Gross is better than anyone of their coaching staff, near his weight.

Alex Dieringer, Alec Pantaleo are also up in Michigan at the RTC last I knew.

He did make a big jump, but there's just a ripple down impact when you lose guys like this as well as...what I'd call a blue chip recruit in...say Estrada. You're getting killed on both sides now.

I am not seeing Gomez in Michigan's lineup - anyone know why he's not there?
