Paladino Wins 125 Bracket, Punches Ticket to NCAA Championship

MEQUON, Wis. - UW-Stevens Point men's wrestler Luca Paladino (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) won out in the 125 bracket at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional and will represent the Pointers at the NCAA Championships next month.


Paladino was a win away from clinching a spot at the national tournament entering the day Saturday. He earned a 4-2 decision win to do just that and advance to the finals in the 125 bracket. There, he won in sudden victory, 6-4.

Trystan Altensey (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) just missed out on joining Paladino. Altensey took fourth in the 184 bracket He earned a win by fall and took a 2-0 decision to reach the third-place match. In the third-place match, Altensey came up short in a major decision loss.

Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) finished fifth in the 165 bracket. He began Saturday with a 9-3 decision win. Then he dropped a 5-1 sudden victory to fall to the fifth-place match. There, he picked up a 6-2 sudden victory win.

Blaze Thurber (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) finished seventh in the 133 bracket getting the victory in the seventh-place match by medical forfeit.

Paladino will head to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 10. Action in Roanoke, Va., begins at 11:00 a.m. ET that day.
