ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Undefeated in the tournament, Wisconsin wrestling's Dean Hamiti claimed the 165-pound crown of the 2023 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, March 5. The Badgers sophomore helped lead seven wrestlers in total to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Wisconsin finished eighth overall in the team standings with 55.5 points among 14 teams. Penn State won the team title with 147.0, while Iowa finished second with 134.5. Complete brackets are available to view at Big Ten Wrestling Championship Central.

Hamiti earned a 9-6 decision against Iowa's Patrick Kennedy to win the title, collecting three takedowns and riding time against the Hawkeye. Hamiti was also named to the Big Ten's 2023 All-Tournament team.

Competing in Ann Arbor at Michigan's Crisler Center, Wisconsin had advanced five wrestlers - Eric Barnett (125 pounds), Joseph Zargo (141), Hamiti (165), Braxton Amos (197) and Trent Hillger (285) - to the NCAA Championships after Saturday's sessions, while four additional Badgers - Taylor LaMont (133), Austin Gomez (149), Garrett Model (157) and Tyler Dow (184) - were still in contention.

The reigning Big Ten Champion at 149 pounds, Gomez was challenged by injury at the tournament and finished with two losses on Saturday before medically forfeiting his remaining matches on Sunday. The Badgers now await if Gomez will earn an at-large NCAA qualification early this week.

Heavyweight Hillger finished sixth overall, after initially advancing to the tournament semifinals on Saturday at 285 pounds. On Sunday morning, Hillger dropped a hard-fought 7-4 decision to Ohio State's Tate Orndorff and then medically forfeited the fifth-place match in the tournament's final session.

Barnett finished fifth overall at 125 pounds, after dropping his consolation semifinal to Northwestern's Michael DeAusgustino in a 3-2 decision. He then avenged his earlier Saturday loss by pin with a 7-4 decision victory over Minnesota's Patrick McKee.

Sophomores Zargo and Amos both earned wins on Sunday to earn seventh-place finishes.

Although out of contention for the podium, both LaMont and Model picked up victories in their respective weight classes in a ninth-place bracket to earn late qualifications to the NCAA tournaent.

LaMont needed two victories on Sunday to earn his qualification, defeating Indiana's Henry Porter 7-4 and Purdue's Dustin Norris 3-1. A transfer this season from Utah Valley, LaMont will make his fifth career appearance at the national tournament and had previously earned All-America honors in 2021.

Model needed only one win on Sunday to qualify, taking down Ohio State's Paddy Gallagher 3-2 to earn his second career appearance at the national tournament.

Redshirt senior Dow lost his Sunday morning match to Northwestern's Evan Bates in a 11-3 major decision before medically forfeiting his final match. He also will await this week's At-Large qualifications with a possible opportunity still available to advance to the national tournament for the first-time in his UW career.
