There are way too many old refs still getting action at the state tournament.  These guys can't move with the action and are making match changing mistakes.  Saw one who was getting down to look for a pin and accidentally blew his whistle, which let the other kid get a fresh start!  I know there is a ref shortage, but these AARP members should not keep getting to do the biggest matches of the year just because they have for the past 20 years.

Put on the stripes. Be the change you desire.

I see plenty of younger refs at tournaments during the year. WIAA has to select some of the younger guys.

Agree, it was nice to see Pat Austinson get his shot.

The WIAA should invite every certified official to the state meet and give free 300 level tickets for the entire event.  But then also hold 1 hour long seminars spaced throughout the day and rotate them through also sitting matside and learning.   Seminars could be in a room adjacent to the Kohl center.   Sit next to a mentor and discuss situations.  Those that go through these mentorship trainings over the multiple days will become eligible to work the state tournament

The state tournament is a great time to combine fun and training for ALL officials.  Half the day officials are getting better at their craft and the other half they are just fans enjoying the sport.
Of Course, this is only my opinion and no one elses!

Really good suggestion!
Merely having an opinion doesn't necessarily make it a good one

I also think getting younger referees involved in Regionals and maybe even Sectionals to an extent as the assistant referees. Give them a chance be on the mat during the State Series while learning in matches that are a bit more high stakes.

Pat was one of the smoothest out there all weekend. Did not realize that was his first one.
