Paladino Takes Third, Six Pointers Land on Podium

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point men's wrestling team finished sixth at the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) held on the UWSP campus on Saturday.

Luca Paladino (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) placed third at 125 to lead the Pointers. After dropping his first match of the day, he went 3-0 in the consolation bracket. He won a tiebreaker and two decisions to take third.

Austin Schrei (Berlin, Wis./Berlin) finished fifth in the 174 bracket. He had three wins, all in the consolation bracket. One by fall, a 602 decision and win by forfeit in the fifth-place match. Josh Heuss (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) earned a 3-1 decision win in his first match in the bracket.

Trystan Altensey (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) also picked up a fifth-place finish in the 184 bracket. He earned a 5-2 decision win and a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.

Blaze Thurber (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) took sixth in the 133 bracket. He picked up a major decision win, 11-2, in the consolation bracket on the day.

Joey Ahern also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 149 bracket. He won a 9-7 decision in the consolation bracket.

Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) had two wins in the 285 bracket to come in sixth. He won a 3-1 decision and advanced to the fifth-place match with a win by opponent injury.

Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) earned a 3-1 sudden victory in his opening match in the 165 bracket. In the 197 bracket, Blake Flach (Shell Lake, Wis./Shell Lake) won his first match by a 5-2 decision.

UWSP will head to the Upper Midwest Regional on Feb. 24 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
