No. 5 Buckeyes Win at No. 14 Northwestern, 21-12

No. 5 Buckeyes Win at No. 14 Northwestern, 21-12
Ohio State returns home for Senior Night vs. Nebraska Friday
   
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 5 Ohio State (12-2, 6-1) returned to the win column with a 21-12 win at No. 14 Northwestern (5-3, 4-3) Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois.
In the first five bouts of the day, Ohio State won three in overtime and another by just a point in taking a 12-3 lead. There was no first-period scoring in any of the first six matches of the day with the Buckeyes winning five.
Three true freshmen earned wins for the Buckeyes with Jesse Mendez (133), Seth Shumate (184) and Luke Geog (197) earning victories. 
How it Happened
 
133 | No. 9 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. No. 13 Chris Cannon (NW) | SV-1, 6-4
Mendez, who suffered a cut over his right eye in the first, and Cannon were scoreless after the first period. Cannon scored first with an escape and added a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Mendez then escaped to end the second and added another halfway through the third to trail 3-2. Mendez then got the takedown and the 4-3 lead with less than 30 seconds to go. Cannon then escaped late to send it to sudden victory tied 4-all. Mendez got the win in the extra session with a scrambling takedown to win by decision, 6-4.
 
141 | No. 8 Frankie Tal-Shahar (NW) def. No. 19 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) | D, 3-2
After a scoreless first, Tal-Shahar got the quick escape to start the second for a 1-0 lead. That was the only score until D'Emilio escaped to tie it at 1-all early in the third. Tal-Shahar took the lead on a takedown but D'Emilio escaped to make it 3-2 Northwestern, which held on for the win by decision.   
 
149 | No. 3 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. No. 4 Yahya Thomas (NW) | TB-3, 2-1
Like the first two bouts, there was no score in the first. Sasso, choosing bottom, escaped to open the second for a 1-0 lead. That was it for the scoring in the second. Thomas tied it at 1-all with the escape to open the third. The match went to sudden victory tied 1-all and then to the first tiebreaker where Sasso escaped for a 2-1 lead. Thomas chose neutral in the second tiebreaker but was unable to get the takedown. Sasso won by decision, 2-1.
 
157 | No. 25 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. No. 11 Trevor Chumbley (NW) | TB-3, 3-3 (RT)
After another scoreless first, Gallagher escaped for the 1-0 lead heading into the third. Chumbley evened the match at 1-all with an escape but Gallagher got the takedown for 3-1 lead with a minute left in the third. Gallagher was then called for locked hands and penalized a point for a 3-2 OSU lead. Chumbley then tied it with an escape at 3-all. That's where it ended, sending the bout into sudden victory. Both wrestlers had a chance for the winning takedown but neither was successful. Chumbley started down in the first tiebreaker but was not able to escape. Gallagher chose neutral and did not score but won by decision, 3-3 on criteria (riding time advantage 0:30).
 
165 | No. 12 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. No. 18 Maxx Mayfield (NW) | D, 3-2
Yet again there was no score in the first. Mayfield got on the board with an escape to start the second and held that lead after five minutes of action. Kharchla tied it with an escape and took the lead with a takedown with under a minute to go. Mayfield escaped but Kharchla held on for the 3-2 win by decision.
 
174 | No. 7 Ethan Smith (OSU) def. No. 17 Troy Fisher (NW) | D, 7-3
In keeping with the trend of the day, there was no scoring in the first. Smith put three points on the board with an escape and takedown to start the second. Fisher escaped to trail 3-1 with two minutes to go. Another Fisher escape made it 3-2 Buckeyes. Smith added a takedown two takedowns in the third to win by decision, 7-3.
 
184 | Seth Shumate (OSU) def. Evan Bates (NW) | D, 7-6
Bates scored first with a takedown and added another late to lead 4-1 after the first. A Bates escape made it 5-1. Shumate then got a takedown to send it into the third with Northwestern leading 5-3. Shumate tied it at 5-all with a reversal. Bates escaped to regain the lead at 6-5. Shumate then got another takedown and held on for the 7-6 win by decision.
 
197 | Luke Geog (OSU) def. Andrew Davison (NW) | D, 9-5
Geog quickly took a 2-1 lead with a takedown followed by a Davison escape. Geog added two more takedowns to lead after the first, 6-3. Davison escaped to open the second to send the bout to the third with Geog in the lead, 6-4. From bottom, Geog got an immediate reversal for an 8-4 lead. Davison added a point with an escape and Geog one for riding time to win by decision, 9-5.
 
HWT | No. 4 Lucas Davison (NW) def. No. 18 Tate Orndorff (OSU) | Fall, 6:02
Davison scored first with an escape to open the second period. Orndorff escaped to tie it at 1-all but Davison got the win by fall at 6:03.
 
125 | No. 8 Michael DeAugustino (NW) def. No. 10 Malik Heinselman (OSU) | D, 4-1
Heinselman trailed 2-0 after the first. DeAugustino added an escape point early in the second for a 3-0 lead. Heinselman got an escape but DeAugustino got the win by decision, 4-1.
