College unattached

Just a question for anyone who might know the answer for wrestlers who need to take a year off at maybe a school without wrestling can they wrestle unattached at all college opens? And how does that work with eligibility? I know that they can't wrestle in any conference or regional or NCAA tournament but opens what are the rules on that?
