COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (5-1, 1-1) fell to No. 3 Michigan (5-0, 1-0) 29-8 Friday at the Covelli Center in front of a crowd of 4,125.
No. 2 Sammy Sasso put the first points on the board for the Buckeyes at 149 for his 26th-consecutive win in dual competitions. Sasso's streak includes wins in 19-consecutive Big Ten duals.
How it Happened
125 | No. 18 Mailk Heinselman (OSU) vs. No. 1 Nick Suriano (UM)
Suriano struck first with a takedown about halfway into the first period. Heinselman recorded an escape followed by a Suriano takedown. Up 4-1 to start the second, Suriano escaped and added a takedown to lead 7-1 after two. Suriano built the lead in the third to win by major decision, 11-3.

133 | Will Betancourt (OSU) vs. No. 8 Dylan Ragusin (UM)
Ragusin took a 6-2 lead into the second period and an 11-3 advantage into the third. Ragusin closed out the final two minutes to win 14-5 by major decision.

141 | No. 21 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) vs. No. 4 Stevan Micic (UM)
D'Emilio trailed 4-2 after the first three minutes and Micic improved the lead to 7-3 after the second period. D'Emilio recorded a takedown and a couple escapes in the third but Micic held on for the win by decision, 12-7

149 | No. 2 Sammy Sasso (OSU) vs. Cole Mattin (UM)
Mattin scored a minute into the first with a takedown. Sasso countered with an escape and a takedown to take the lead 3-2. Mattin tied it at 3 on an escape to head in the second tied at 3-all. Sasso started the second in the down position and scored a reversal to reclaim the lead, 5-3. Sasso added another takedown to lead 7-4 with two minutes to go. Sasso then upped the lead to win by decision, 9-4, to give the Buckeyes three team points.

157 | Jashon Hubbard (OSU) vs. No. 15 Will Lewan (UM)
Hubbard scored first but trailed after the first period, 3-2. Both wrestlers battled until a third period Lewan takedown secured the win by decision, 6-3.

165 | No. 7 Carson Kharchla (OSU) vs. Patrick Nolan (UM)
Kharchla came out strong with four first-period takedowns and a four-point near fall to lead 12-3 after the first period. The lead increased to 22-6 (6:30) for the win by technical fall.

174 | No. 7 Ethan Smith (OSU) vs. No. 6 Logan Massa (UM)
After a scoreless first period, Smith recorded a pair of takedowns in the second and lead 4-2 heading into the third. Massa added an escape, a takedown and a near fall in the third to win 10-5 by decision.

184 | No. 7 Kaleb Romero (OSU) vs. No. 2 Myles Amine (UM)
There was no score after the first three minutes. An escape put Amine up 1-0 heading into the third. A Romero escape tied it at 1-all heading into sudden victory. After a couple scrambles yielded no points for either wrestler, Amine got the winning takedown to win, 3-1.

197 | No. 20 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) vs. No. 8 Patrick Brucki (UM)
Hoffman trailed 2-1 after the first period. The Brucki lead increased to 5-1 after two and ended with a Brucki 5-2 win by decision.

•   Ohio State and Michigan have met 90 times in the series history with the Buckeyes owning a 20-67-3 record since the first meeting in 1924.
•   Against Michigan State the last time out, Ohio State came away with 27-14 win to open the Big Ten season. The Buckeyes won six of 10 bouts, including four of the last five. Ohio State recorded bonus points in four matches.
•   The Buckeyes defeated No. 22 Pittsburgh Dec. 12, 30-7. Ohio State won eight of 10 bouts highlighted by a Top 10 clash between then No. 8 Carson Kharchla and No. 9 Jake Wentzell of Pitt. Kharchla earned the win (4-3) by decision. His efforts earned him the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Dec. 15.
•   Ohio State finished second at the 2021 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Dec. 3-4. The Buckeyes have six team titles since 2009 at the CKLVI including three-consecutive (2016, 17, 18). The Buckeyes have placed outside the Top 5 just once in the past decade and own 10 Top 3 finishes. Individually, Kaleb Romero took top honors in the 184-pound bracket in his first competition of the year.
•   Ohio State cruised to a home 51-0 win over Notre Dame College Nov. 23. All 10 Buckeyes contributed bonus points in the win.
•   The Buckeyes traveled to No. 10 Virginia Tech and knocked off the Hokies 17-13 Nov. 19.


•   Ohio State opened the season with a dual vs. No. 14 North Carolina. Ohio State built a 17-0 lead starting with the 165 match and the debut of Carson Kharchla. The No. 8 Buckeyes won the match 23-12.
•   According to Intermat Wrestling, Ohio State entered the match vs. Michigan with nine Buckeyes ranked among the Top 25. They are: Malik Heinselman (No. 18/125); Dylan D'Emilio (No. 21/141); Sammy Sasso (No. 2/149); Bryce Hepner (No. 26/157), Carson Kharchla (No. 7/165); Ethan Smith (No. 7/174); Kaleb Romero (No. 7/184), Gavin Hoffman (No. 20/197) and Tate Orndorff (No. 12/HWT).

•   A contingent of Buckeyes competed in the Storm Open Dec. 5 in Painesville, Ohio, and came away with five individual champions. Brady Koontz (125), Will Betancourt (133), Jashon Hubbard (157), Fritz Schierl (174) and Rocky Jordan (184) all came away with titles in their respective weight classes.
•   Several Buckeyes earned titles at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open Nov. 14 in Tiffin, Ohio. Ohio State earned titles in the Open Division at 125 (Malik Heinselman), at 141 (Dylan D'Emilio), at 149 (Sammy Sasso), at 157 (Bryce Hepner), at 165 (Carson Kharchla), at 174 (Ethan Smith), at 197 (Gavin Hoffman) and at 285 (Tate Orndorff). In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, the Buckeyes won at 157 (Paddy Gallagher) and at heavyweight (Mike Misita).
•   Sasso finished the 2021 season as the NCAA Runner-up at 149 with a 16-1 overall record and a 9-0 mark in duals. He recorded a 9-1 record vs. ranked opponents and had five pins, one technical fall and one major decision on the year. He is 5-0 this season with a Top 5 win vs. No. 5 Zach Sherman of North Carolina.
•   At the Michigan State Open Nov. 6 in East Lansing freshman Andre Gonzales earned the title in the freshman/sophomore division at 133 with a 4-0 record. Classmate Mike Misita finished No. 2 in the heavyweight bracket with a 3-1 record. In all, seven Buckeyes were among the Top six in their respective brackets.
•   On Nov. 10, Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes, signed the top-ranked recruiting class in the country, including the Top 3 overall recruits.
•   Broderick Harris was included in the signing class as an honorary member. Broderick, who aspired to wrestle for the Buckeyes and in the Olympics, was a tireless and fierce competitor. He tragically died in a house fire at age 11 in 2014.
