49 Year Old Wrestling Coach to Make MMA Debut

Milwaukee Man set to make one of the oldest debut fights in MMA history

Ben Tomes, a longtime urban high school teacher and wrestling coach, will make one of the oldest debut fights on record for the Chosen Few Fighting Championships on January 29th, 2022. Tomes will take on 36 year old Dylan Roed (3-7) in a Featherweight Bout at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. At age 49, it is believed that Tomes will be the 2nd oldest fighter to ever make their initial competitive appearance in an MMA cage. Tomes is also a survivor of spinal trauma, and will become one of the first fighters ever to compete after a spinal fusion.

Tomes is fighting to create awareness of Parental Alienation and cause change in the Family Court System after becoming alienated from his teenage daughter in August of 2020. His fight is part of an upcoming book and documentary, both entitled, Proxy War. Tomes has previously published a pair of books in 2013 and 2014, entitled Confessions of the Unmedicated Mind, Volume 1 and 2.

Tomes is currently the long-term coach and cornerman of UFC stars Ode "The Jamaican Sensation" Osbourne and Leah "Nidas" Letson, and has worked with several professional fighters of note in the UFC and Bellator, including current UFC analyst Din Thomas, Jamey Simmons, Montel Jackson, Zak Ottow, Emannuel Sanchez, former WWE star CM Punk, and several others.

A Door County native, Tomes graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1990, and is a 1997 Carroll University graduate, where he competed as a wrestler from 1993-97. He was Wrestling USA Magazine's 2002 National Coach of the Year and received the Prep Coach of Influence award from Sports Illustrated in 2005. He was additionally featured in a PBS Documentary entitled Wrestling City Kids in 2003. He has served as a Head Coach at Milwaukee Custer (WI), Jensen Beach (FL), and William T. Dwyer (FL). He was most recently the Head Coach at Milwaukee Marshall from 2017-2020. He is currently a MMA Coach for Wanderley Jiu Jitsu in Wauwatosa, WI. Tomes will represent Wanderley BJJ and MMA for this fight.
