The WIAA is scheduled to hold a girls state individual wrestling tournament for the first time in the 2021-22 season, Jan. 29 in La Crosse.

There are 12 weight classes listed by the WIAA for girls wrestling: 100 pounds, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185 and 235.

Last season, Stoughton's Rose Ann Marshall was one of the top female wrestlers in the state and a previous winner at 113 pounds at the 2020 Wisconsin High School girls championships. She now is on the women's wresting roster at Friends University in Kansas.

This season, several area schools are expected to have female wrestlers in their programs. For instance, Oregon first-year head coach Brian Hookstead said five girls came out for wrestling this season, while Sun Prairie coach Jim Nelson has two girls in the program, Rachel Zych and Sophia Bassino.

Many likely will break onto the scene with this opportunity. Here are some girls wrestlers to know:

Alexis Winecke, sr., Baraboo
Mattie Papenthien, jr., Middleton
Hanna Errthum, jr., Mount Horeb
Rachel Zych, sr., Sun Prairie
