UWSP Wrestling Sees Pair Reach Finals at Pointer Open

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point men's wrestling team had two athletes reach the finals in their respective brackets and five with top-four finishes at the Pointer Open on Saturday.


Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) just missed winning the 165 bracket. He opened the day with a tiebreak win. Then a 3-0 decision, a fall and another decision win pushed Peckham to the finals. He went the distance and then some, but ultimately placed second after a sudden victory defeat.

Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) took second in the 184 bracket. After a double bye, he won a 9-1 major decision and an 11-4 decision to reach the finals. He fell in the finals by a 6-2 decision.

Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) saw his 44-match win streak snapped in the semifinals of the 133 bracket. He won by fall, major decision and tech fall to reach the semifinals. He then saw the win streak stopped with an 8-5 decision loss. In the consolation bracket, he won both matches by fall to take third in the bracket.

Blaze Thurber (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) finished fourth in the 125 bracket. He won an 8-6 decision in the his opening match. He then advanced in the consolation bracket with a 12-4 major decision and a fall at 6:20 to reach the third-place match.

Trystan Altensey (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) placed fourth at 174. He pinned his opponent in 1:09 in his first match of the day. Then, he won a 16-0 tech fall to reach the third-place match.

Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) finished sixth in the 285 bracket. He won three times on the day, including two wins by fall. Noah Wieczorek (Clear Lake, Wis./Clear Lake) won a 6-2 decision in the bracket.

Drew Willeman (Osceola, Wis./Osceola) won three times in the 141 bracket, all by decision, to finish runner-up in the consolation championships. Luke Hill (Cashe, Okla./Cashe) won twice in the 141 consolation bracket. Cooper Peterson (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) had one win in the bracket as well.

Keith Tourtillott (Keshena, Wis./Shawano Community) won twice in the 197 bracket, including a sudden victory over teammate Blake Flach (Shell Lake, Wis./Shell Lake). Flach picked up a win by fall in the bracket.

Tucker Almond (Bossier City, La./Airline) and Josh Heuss (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) each won twice in the championship bracket at 165. They each won again their first match of the consolation bracket. Heuss took fifth with Almond taking sixth.

Sam Johnson (Ettrick, Wis./Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau) won twice by decision in the 149 bracket. In the 157 bracket, Tucker Bethea (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) won by fall in his first consolation match.

UWSP travels to Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 6) for the Adrian Duels. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. ET.
