No. 21 Purdue Wrestling Roughs Up Rider 33-3

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The No. 21 Purdue wrestling team closed its east coast trip Saturday with a dominant 33-3 victory at Rider University. The Boilermakers took nine-of-10 bouts from the Broncs, including a pair of falls, improving to 2-0 on the early season.

The Boilermakers gutted out win after win over the first five bouts, seeing only a total of 10 points separating the two squads at the midway point. Senior Devin Schroder held a 4-0 lead surrendering a late takedown in his 4-2 win over Tyler Klinsky, and both freshman Matt Ramos and senior Parker Filius went to overtime against their respective opponents. Ramos fought his way out of a 4-1 hole at 133, scoring two takedowns in the third and forcing the extra session, where he put No. 24 Richie Koehler on his back for a fall at 8:08. Filius put on similar performance at 141, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to defeat No. 22 Quinn Kinner 7-5. Filius scored a pair of takedowns in the third and added another in the overtime for his second win of the day.

Sophomore Trey Kruse continued the theatrics at 149, surrendering early takedowns to Cole McComas before scoring one of his own in the second and another in the third for an 8-7 decision; the first career varsity dual win for Kruse. Junior Kendall Coleman rebounded from his earlier decision, forcing a second-period stalling call and scoring two takedowns in the third in a 7-4 win over No. 31 Jake Silverstein.

Rider got on the board at 165, but sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis put Purdue back in the win column with a 4-2 decision over Shane Reitsma. Nijenhuis struck early and held position late to earn his first win of the season. Senior Max Lyon improved to 2-0 with a 3-1 decision over George Walton at 184. Lyon got to Walton's legs a number of times but couldn't find the finish, setting for stalling points awarded for his consistent, unanswered attacks.

In an anticipated rematch from the 2019-20 season, No. 14 junior Thomas Penola was dominant in a 7-2 decision over No. 26 Matt Correnti. Penola picked up two in the first, rode Correnti out in the second and then tacked on a pair of takedowns in the third to seal the win over the former Rutgers wrestler
Senior Michael Woulfe finished the dual with more fireworks, picking up his second fall of the day as he spladled Rider freshman David Szuba and stuck him at 4:09.

The Boilermakers remain on the road next weekend, heading to Cleveland State on Sunday, Nov. 14, for a 2 p.m. ET dual against the Vikings.
