Berlin Repeats as 133 Champion, Named WIAC Wrestler of the Meet

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Senior Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) finished his second-straight unbeaten season with a fall in the title match to win at 133 again at the WIAC Wrestling Championships (presented by Culver's) on Sunday. Berlin was also named the WIAC Wrestler of the Meet.

Berlin went 3-0 at the championships on Sunday. He needed just 60 seconds to pin his opponent in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he won a 7-2 decision against Javon Taschuk of UWEC. Berlin repeated as champ in 133 with a third period fall over Isaac Wiegel of UW-Platteville. With his three victories on Sunday, Berlin went 40-0 over the past two seasons.

Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) took second in the 157 bracket. He advanced to the semifinals on an injury default just under a minute into the quarterfinal match. He then took a 4-3 decision to move into the finals. There he suffered an 11-3 major decision.

Brandon Peckham (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) finished fourth at 165. He won decisions 9-3 and 3-2 in the consolation bracket. In the third-place match, he forced overtime, by came up just short, 7-6, in the tiebreak.

At 141, Colin Barker (Davis, Ill./Dakota) took fourth. He opened the day with a 10-2 major decision. In the quarterfinals, he picked up a 12-10 sudden victory. In the consolation bracket, he won a 6-3 decision.

Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) was fourth at 197. He opened the day with a tech fall victory, 16-0. In the consolation bracket, he again won by tech fall, 16-0. Then earned a 12-6 decision to move to the third-place match.

Ben Kasten (Reedsville, Wis./Brillion) was the fifth-place finisher at 174. He won three matches on the day in the consolation bracket. His first win came by a 6-2 decision. Kasten then pinned his opponent at 3:32 to move to the fifth-place match, There, he earned a 14-6 major decision.

Taran Holland (Princeton, Wis./Princeton) placed sixth at 184. He won by fall in the consolation bracket at 2:53.


Mason Wheeler (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) finished sixth at 149. He won a 12-8 decision in the consolation bracket. Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) took sixth at 285 with a 3-2 decision win in the consolation bracket. Griffin Chmiel (Albany, Ohio/Alexander) also placed sixth at 125.


The Pointers earned 101 team points to place fourth in the five-team championship. UW-La Crosse earned the team title with 168 points. UW-Whitewater did not participate.
