Berlin, Candre, Kohn, Momont Earn Subway Athlete of the Year Honors

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point athletics department has named the winners of the 2020-21 Subway Athletes of the Year awards. UWSP track and field's Tom Kohn (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and Sylviann Momont (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) were recipients for male and female individual sports. Wrestling's Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and softball's Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) were named winners for male and female team sports.

Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) (Wrestling)
Berlin repeats as Athlete of the Year as he did with most accolades in the shortened 2020-21 season. He was named WIAC Wrestler of the Year for the second-consecutive season. He went 8-0 on the year, extending his unbeaten streak to 40 after a 32-0 season in 2019-20. He repeated as the WIAC Champion at 133 and was named WIAC Wrestler of the Meet. Berlin was named WIAC Wresting Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21.

Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) (Softball)
Candre was named WIAC Position Player of the Year after leading the Pointers to the best finish since 2011. She was also named to the NFCA All-Great Lakes Region third team. Candre led the Pointers with a .409 season average and four home runs. She led all WIAC hitters with a .509 average during conference play. She led the league with 27 hits, 43 total bases and an on-base percentage of .559 during conference action. Candre was the WIAC Softball Athlete of the Week for the week of April 19-25.

Tom Kohn (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) (Track & Field)
Kohn was the national runner-up in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was his best finish at nationals and he came up just 0.09 meters shy of the champion's distance. It was the second All-American honor in the triple jump for Kohn. He was an All-Region honoree in the triple jump during both the indoor and outdoor seasons this year. Kohn was also named WIAC Field Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 1-7.

Sylviann Momont (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) (Track & Field)
Momont was a two-time All-American at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She placed fourth in the high jump tying her personal-best of 1.73 meters. She also took fifth in the heptathlon with a school record 4977 points. Momont was a five-time All-Region recipient snagging the honor during indoor season in the pentathlon, high jump and 60-meter hurdles. During outdoor season, she was an all-region selection in the heptathlon and high jump.

The winners will receive a commemorative plaque from Subway, the proud sponsor of UWSP's weekly athlete of the week feature on athletics.uwsp.edu during the season.
