Ohio State Edged by Michigan 18-16
Each team won five matches in the varsity dual

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a match between two Top 10 teams as well as two bitter rivals, No. 2 Michigan edged No. 8 Ohio State 18-16 in a thrilling dual Friday night in Ann Arbor.

The team dual came down to the 10th and final match and fittingly, the 157-pound match went the distance. Michigan won the match on riding time after the conclusion of the second set of tiebreaker periods. The Buckeyes are now 5-3 on the season while Michigan returned from a more than two-week break and is now 4-0.

Ethan Smith started the night with a big tone-setting win over No. 23 Cameron Amine in the 165-pound match. Smith had a nice takedown with under 40 seconds left in the third to claim a 4-3 lead and he rode out the remaining seconds for his seventh win of the season.

After Michigan took a 4-3 team lead following the 174-pound match, Rocky Jordan continued his recent run of solid wrestling by dominating Jalani Embree 13-0 for a major decision. That gave the Buckeyes a 7-4 lead.

In the 197-pound bout, Gavin Hoffman took on Olympian Myles Amine. Amine stepped up in weight and was making his season debut. Hoffman wrestled well but eventually fell to the experienced Amine 8-5.

The heavyweight match was a Top 10 dual between No. 9 Tate Orndorff and No. 2 Mason Parris. Parris grabbed the upper hand early and would win the match by major decision to give the Wolverines a 12-7 lead at the halfway point.

Malik Heinselman started the second half with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Kurt McHenry to pull the Buckeyes within two at 12-10. In what felt like a pivotal swing match, Jordan Decatur and Jack Medley hooked up at 133-pounds. Down 3-0, Decatur made a nice roll through for a reversal and then got the escape point at the start of the third to even the match at 3-3. But Medley had the last attack, getting a takedown and eventually winning 6-4.

In another huge match, Dylan D'Emilio caught a takedown against Drew Mattin with just less than 90 seconds remaining to take a 6-4 lead. Mattin escaped quickly to make it 6-5 and D'Emilio was able to fend off Mattin down the stretch for a big three points.

Redshirt-sophomore Sammy Sasso, who is the Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week, looked dominant once again. In a Top 10 showdown with No. 7 Kanen Storr, Sasso had takedowns late in each of the first and second periods to build a 5-0 lead and he went on to win impressively 8-1. Sasso is now 8-0 on the season and he improved to 3-0 all-time against Storr.

That put the Buckeyes in front 16-15 and left the result of the team match squarely on the outcome of the 157-pound match.

The match between No. 26 Elijah Cleary and No. 8 Will Lewan was as tight as a match could be. Neither wrestler scored in the first period and both could muster just an escape point in the second and third. No take downs in the first sudden victory period and again, just an escape point for each wrestler in the first two tiebreakers. Cleary was down to start the second tiebreaker, and on his escape, he nearly ended the match with a reversal.

No points in the second sudden victory period as both wrestlers were battling each other and attrition. Escape points both ways in the second set of tiebreakers but Lewan held the riding time advantage and would win the match both for himself and for his team.

In the extra matches, Chase Singletary improved to 4-1 on the year with a 10-2 major decision over Andrew Davison. That was Singletary's second victory by major decision this season. Michigan would win the other five extra duals.

The Buckeyes are set to conclude the regular season next Friday when it hosts Penn State. The match is set for 7 p.m. and BTN will have all the coverage.
