No. 16 Purdue Wrestling Edged at No. 10 Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ind. - The No. 16 ranked Purdue wrestling team split matches 5-5 at 10th-ranked Illinois on Friday, but came up short on the scoreboard 19-17 at Huff Hall. The bout came down to bonus points as Purdue managed a pair of major decisions, while the Fighting Illini scored a major decision and a fall to account for the final difference. The Boilermakers move to 1-1 on the year, while Illinois improved to 4-0.

Purdue’s five wins on the evening came from second-ranked senior Devin Schroder at 125 pounds, No. 5 sophomore Kendall Coleman at 157 pounds, freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis at 165, No. 20 senior Max Lyon at 184 and No. 18 sophomore Thomas Penola at 197. Coleman and Nijenhuis put up the Boilermakers’ bonus points, while Lyon had an outstanding season debut, taking out the No. 11 wrestler in the country.

Schroder got the Boilermakers off to a solid start with a 2-0 win over No. 13 Justin Cardani. Neither wrestler was able to score a takedown, with the Purdue senior picking up his two tallies on an escape and a stalling point as he improved to 2-0 on the year.

The momentum swung Illinois’ way with back-to-back bonus point wins at 133 and 141 to take a 10-3 edge over the Boilermakers. The Fighting Illini got three more team points at 149 pounds with a decision win for ninth-ranked Michael Carr and took a 13-3 lead after four matches.

Coleman and Nijenhuis ignited the Boilermakers and closed the gap as Coleman rolled up six takedowns in a 14-4 major decision over Johnny Mologousis, while Nijenhuis put together an impressive top performance in an 8-0 major decision over Luke Odom. Coleman eclipsed the 100-takedown mark for his career and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Illinois picked up a key upset win at 174 pounds as DJ Shannon edged out freshman Emil Soehnlen 2-1. Both wrestlers picked up an escape, while Shannon tacked on 1:09 of riding time for the decisive point.

Purdue took the lead with Lyon and Penola’s back-to-back wins as Lyon topped No. 11 Zach Braunagel at 184, while Penola posted a 5-3 decision over No. 24 Matt Wroblewski. Lyon struck first at 184, getting a first-period takedown and ride out, followed by a pair of escapes in the third period for the win. Penola had a workmanlike effort at 197, scoring in the second and third periods to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Illinois clinched the dual at heavyweight, avenging the end of last year’s dual in Illinois, flipping the result with a 4-1 decision for No. 5 Luke Luffman over Jamarcus Grant in his Boilermaker debut.

Purdue returns to action Sunday, heading up to No. 22 Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. CT dual at Wisconsin Field House.
