Purdue Wrestling Falls to Minnesota 27-12

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team fell to visiting 14th-ranked Minnesota on Friday 27-12 at Holloway Gymnasium, moving to 11-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in Big Ten Conference duals. The Boilermakers earned a trio of wins on the evening, including bonus-point victories at 174 and 125 pounds.

The Boilermakers donned special-edition, volt Nike singlets for the dual in honor of cancer survivors, and the uniforms were auctioned off during the dual to the total of $2,680, which will be donated to the Purdue Center for Cancer Research.
No. 6 freshman Kendall Coleman got the dual started at 157 pounds, scoring a second-period takedown to top 22nd-ranked Ryan Thomas 3-1. Coleman pushed the pace for the full seven minutes, but was only able to finish one score as he improved to 25-6 overall on the season and 4-2 in conference duals.

Senior Dylan Lydy continued his red-hot season at 174 pounds, rolling No. 8 Devin Skatzka for a 14-4 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Lydy built a 3-1 lead in the second and then turned up the heat to the tune of 11 points in the third to notch his third straight bonus-point win. Lydy's 10 major decisions on the year are a team best and make him the third Purdue wrestler in the last 11 seasons to post double-digit majors in a season (Max Lyon, 2018 and Chad Welch, 2016).

Lydy now has an 8-1 mark against ranked opponents in 2019-20, including five wins over top-10 ranked opponents. His four takedowns Friday push his career total to 258, passing Tony Vaughn for 15th in program history, while his 105th career win moves him into 12th all-time at Purdue.

No. 6 junior Devin Schroder accounted for the third Purdue win on the evening, overcoming a slow start to post his eighth technical fall of the season; a 20-5 victory over No. 12 Patrick McKee. The Minnesota freshman came out swinging, scoring in the first and second periods to build a 5-2 lead, but the tide turned in the second period as McKee took injury time in a scramble as Schroder worked for an escape. Schroder took bottom after the injury, escaped quickly and scored a takedown and four nearfall points for a 9-5 edge going to the third. Another escape and takedown, followed by eight straight back points sealed up the win, Schroder's 21st of the season and fourth in Big Ten duals.

The dual swung on narrow Minnesota wins at 184, 197, 133 and 149 pounds, where the Golden Gophers won by between one and three points. Lyon did his best to climb out of a six-point hole at 184, but got caught in a scramble with No. 18 Owen Webster and couldn't complete the comeback in an 8-6 loss, while Purdue sophomore Jared Florell was game in his first match of the season at 197 pounds, but came up short 6-3 to Minnesota's Garrett Joles.

A riding-time point was the difference in a 2-1 decision for Minnesota at 133, while fourth-ranked freshman Brayton Lee needed a stalling point and overtime to edge No. 17 Griffin Parriott at 149 pounds in the final bout of the night, 7-5.

Purdue returns to action Sunday, hosting No. 9 Wisconsin in Holloway at 4 p.m. ET, live on the Big Ten Network. The Badgers posted a 27-12 win at Indiana on Friday, winning 6-of-10 matches over the Hoosiers
