Only one I thought was odd was Barry Davis at 35. I would have thought top 20 or even top 15

Jimmy

Lots of head scratchers.

Cool breakdown. I'm sure many are debatable; so debate.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

My Top 3

1. Dan Gable (1 loss in college and high school combined)
2. Dan Hodge (There is a reason it's called the Hodge Trophy)
3. Cael Sanderson (Unbeaten, but did lose in redshirt season)

Any of these all-time rankings (in any sport) always have more current or recent athletes on them.

Like??

Nate Carr is another that I thought should have been a long way closer to the top

Jimmy

Nate Carr was beaten 20-5 by Jim Zalesky head to head. Both won three titles. Carr is ranked, Zalesky is hm? Head scratcher?

So many wrestlers over the decades...   Rating them is an insurmountable task, given the changes that have taken place over that time, let alone all of the great athletes worthy of consideration.
None are so hopelessly enslaved, as those who falsely believe they are free. The truth has been kept from the depth of their minds by masters who rule them with lies. -Johann Von Goethe

From an NCAA perspective, it would be hard to put Cael anywhere but 1. Redshirts are made for growth, whereas Gable did get beaten at his pinnacle. No one was more dominant, IMHO, but he did lose at his peak. Heckuva match by both guys; that was historic.

It's tough to match greats from so many different eras of wrestling.

I will add this - I wore my Dan Gable signature series wrestling shoes in high school, and they worked out great!  ;D

Those were the nicest shoes. I always wanted a pair of the leather Brutes they used to make.
