Trio of Purdue Wrestlers Victorious in Dual Loss at No. 6 Michigan

Jan. 20, 2019

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A trio of Purdue wrestlers were victorious in a 23-9 dual loss at No. 6 Michigan on Sunday. Devin Schroder put the No. 18 Boilermakers on the board in the first bout before the Wolverines flexed their strength and won the next six weights. Purdue's Max Lyon and No. 12 Christian Brunner went back-to-back with decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. The loss evened the Boilermakers' overall and Big Ten Conference dual records at 5-5 and 2-2. Michigan remains unscathed at 8-0, 4-0 Big Ten.

A four-point nearfall in the second period held for Schroder in a 4-1 showing against U-M's Austin Assad at 125 pounds. The win was the fourth straight for the redshirt sophomore hailing from Grand Rapids, lifting his season mark to 16-6.

Michigan took the next six weights. The first of three bouts with ranked wrestlers facing off saw No. 19 Ben Thornton suffer a 9-1 setback by top-ranked 133-pounder Stevan Micic.

Wild scrambles were the focal point of a battle between No. 12 Griffin Parriott and No. 11 Alec Pantaleo. The Boilermaker struck first with an early takedown and he added an escape to start the second period to hold a 3-1 advantage. With 20 seconds remaining in the frame, the Wolverine found a double-leg that Parriott attempted to roll though, but the takedown was awarded and it evened the match at 3-3. An escape to start the third proved to be the winning point for Pantaleo with a 4-3 decision.

It was an upper-body battle between No. 14 Dylan Lydy of Purdue and third-ranked Myles Amine of Michigan at 174 pounds. Takedowns in the first and third periods allowed Amine to avenge last season's dual loss to Lydy, taking a 5-3 decision over the Boilermaker.

Lyon downed J.T. Correll 10-4 in the ensuing match at 184 pounds. The Purdue sophomore recorded three takedowns, earned a two-point nearfall and racked up nearly 3:00 of riding time. It was the fourth straight win for Lyon, who improved to 16-7.

A third-period Brunner reversal broke a tie and proved to be the difference in a 4-2 win over Jackson Striggow. Each wrestler scored a takedown in the first and second periods and finished the frame on top. With the win, Brunner, a two-time NCAA qualifier, pushed his junior record to 14-5, while winning his fourth straight match.

The Boilermakers return to Holloway Gymnasium on Friday, facing Penn State at 7 p.m. ET.
