Rutgers Wrestling Reaches 2,000 Season Tickets Sold

$100,000 to be donated back to program in memory of Sam Cali

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2017) – Rutgers wrestling has sold 2,000 season tickets for 2017-18, reaching its goal in memory of Sam Cali, a Scarlet Knight wrestler who passed away last summer.

An anonymous donor will now donate $100,000 back to the program towards the naming of a Rutgers wrestling assistant coach's office at the new RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center in Cali's honor.

"Achieving this goal means the world to us and the Cali family," said head coach Scott Goodale. "We love Sam and keep him in our thoughts. We want him and his family to know that he is still a part of this program every day.

"Reaching 2,000 season tickets sold shows just how much this state cares about the sport of wrestling and our program. I want to thank our administration, donors and the fans for their continued support. We're excited to wrestle in front of our fans for what we are hoping is a historic season right here in New Jersey."

This marks the third-straight year Rutgers wrestling has sold the most season tickets in program history, surpassing the 1,000 season tickets sold mark in each of the last three seasons. Season tickets are still available through the Rutgers Athletics ticket office by calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678) or visiting scarletknights.com.

RU's 2017-18 historic home slate features some of the top programs in the nation, as Big Ten Conference foes Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State and reigning national champion Penn State are all set to compete at the RAC this season. North Carolina and Hofstra also visit the RAC to round out RU's home schedule. All home dates and times are subject to change.

In total, Rutgers' six home opponents produced 41 NCAA qualifiers, 21 All-Americans, 10 championship finalists and seven NCAA individual champions last season.

With six individuals ranked in the FloWrestling Top 20 in their respective weight classes, Rutgers opens its 2017-18 dual season Nov. 4 against Maryland at Yankee Stadium, part of the "Battle in the Bronx" doubleheader with the football team. RU returns eight NCAA qualifiers from a year ago after it finished 12-5 and ranked tied for 12th nationally in the final USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll.
