Michigan Selected to Host 2022 NCAA Championships

The 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships is slated for March 17-19, 2022, at Little Caesars Arena. Michigan previously teamed with the Detroit Sports Commission to host the 2007 NCAA Championships at the Palace of Auburn Hills, while U-M also hosted the 1934 tournament at the Intramural Building on campus.

Scheduled to open in September, Little Caesars Arena will anchor a new sports and entertainment district in downtown Detroit and serve as home to the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings organizations. The $732 million arena has a projected seating capacity of 20,000, while the surrounding area -- "The District Detroit" -- will feature hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. Little Caesars Arena was also selected to host the 2020 Men's Frozen Four.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today (Tuesday, April 18) that the University of Michigan has been selected to host seven postseason events -- the 2019 and 2022 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regionals, 2020 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship, 2021 NCAA Field Hockey Championship, 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Regional, 2022 NCAA Water Polo Championship and 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The gymnastics, field hockey, water polo and golf events will all be held on campus in Ann Arbor, while U-M will partner with the Detroit Sports Commission to host the wrestling championship at the new Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit area.

"We are grateful to the NCAA for entrusting the University of Michigan to host these championship events," said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We have phenomenal facilities, a dedicated staff and a long history of hosting championships. We look forward to welcoming participating schools, student-athletes and fans to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan."

Crisler Center was selected as the host venue for two NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regionals, scheduled for April 6, 2019, and April 2, 2022. It will mark the ninth and 10th times that Ann Arbor has played host for a NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional. Michigan won in five of its previous host roles and advanced to NCAA Championship in seven.

The 2020 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship is scheduled for April 17-18, 2020, at Crisler Center. It will be the fourth time the University of Michigan will play host to an NCAA men's gymnastics national championship. Michigan hosted the event in 1951, 1971 and 2014, with the latter two events being held at Crisler. The Wolverines captured the 2014 NCAA championship in their last turn as host, with Sam Mikulak taking the all-around and parallel bar national titles.

The 2021 NCAA Field Hockey Championship, which will feature the NCAA semifinals and championship game, will be held Nov. 19-21, 2021, at the Wolverines' Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan previously hosted the championship event in 2015 and has served as a regional host for the NCAA first and second rounds on three occasions (2001, '04, '07). Ocker Field is currently undergoing installation of a new turf field.

The University of Michigan Golf Course will serve as the site for a 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Regional, scheduled for May 9-11, 2022. The course has hosted three NCAA Regionals, most recently an NCAA Men's Golf Regional in 2012, and one NCAA Final (1947). Michigan's new $15 million, 23,000-square-foot clubhouse opened this spring.

The NCAA Water Polo Championship will return to Canham Natatorium on May 13-15, 2022, and will mark the third time that Michigan has hosted the national event (2005, 2011).

Michigan has previously hosted 16 NCAA championships -- covering eight different sports -- on campus since 1932, while the upcoming men's gymnastics, field hockey and water polo events will be the fifth, sixth and seventh in Ann Arbor since 2005.
