My wife accidentally set the ditch on fire. Hope that counts. :(
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Is it early enough that the birds that ground nest are not nesting yet?

One of my friends is a 'prairie expert'. He has restored many acres of land to prairie. He burned one spot today, and if it is not raining, will burn a large prairie tomorrow.  He is very concerned with ecology and nature, so I am pretty sure he would plan to disturb as little wildlife as possible.

I would think it would be a couple weeks yet before nesting starts.

I asked him your question yesterday. He agrees with you, it is early enough.

I set the neighbors field on fire once and a water way another time. All in the early spring and it was helpful that my neighbor also is the towns fire chief ;) Havent lived that one down in the 18 years I have lived in my area either!!!!!!

I saw some control burning in the area in the last week or so. I have also been told it is not nesting season either.

as with Tom, I also have a few friend who are 'prairie expert, every year As long as i can remember we burn close to a 1000 acres of Prairie in Northern Rock Co on the southside of the Big K, the DNR is quite impressed with the system we have, 10-15  4 wheelers each equipped with 25 gal water tanks with hose and pumps mounted on the back and of course a cooler full of PBR or Mountain Dew   :) along with 2 Tractors with 200 gal WATER drums with hose and pumps, a few Rakes/ Oil Torches  and 1 book of Matches  :)   Next weekend will be the weekend for us as it has to dry out a little more to make it effective and at the same time i can stop down near the creek and spear a few suckers if the sun cooperates...  :) Nothing like a huge Spring burn with the hunters of The Otter Creek Militia .... :)
