I think part of my life is stored in music sound captures.  Many, many songs cue a thought of a time in my life, sometimes a grade in school, sometimes a specific place where/when I was hearing the song... who I may have been with...
Most of 'my' music was heard by me on a small AM radio.  two dials .. On/Off/Volume and the station dial...  Plastic box about the size of half a shoe box.  that was at the edge of my bed and we had a slightly larger radio in the kitchen between the sink and the dining table.
When my grandmother passed away we were the recipients of a 'hi fi' ... large thing with actual speakers and a turn table as well as AM tuner... There may have been an FM tuner in there too.  Thanks Grandma.

And I have to say, none of this is related to 'hidden meanings' in songs etc... I was (am) REALLY boring and dull and naïve... my most exciting thing to do was sit and day dream...

Some memorable music to me...

1) first 'favorite' song ... Eight Miles High by the Byrds ... released July 1966 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoSwOrytf_M
2) first album I ever purchased... Cosmos Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival released July 1970 (as I recall, an 'album' price then was about $3.50.. a FORTUNE in $$$$ at the time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo's_Factory
3) Song that reminds me of Junior High for some reason... Well, there are way too many to even remember at once.. but tonight on the radio
Spooky by the Classics IV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAP84Zc_CYU

Great thread concept, Tom.  8)  Between birth and the start of high school, I moved 17 times.  There are so many songs that trigger memories of specific times, people, and places, for me.  The music of our childhood definitely frames our personal history, setting the tone for continued musical associations in adulthood.  There are so many in my case that it's hard to narrow it down to a few, but here are some highlights that immediately come to mind:

All I Have To Do Is Dream, by the Everly Brothers -  I was in Kindergarten, living in Macomb, IL.  My parents were college students.

Peter, Paul, and Mary (their first album)- This is the first album I remember my parents ever buying.  I was in 4th grade, living in Leland, IL.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si3fl-XHzJ8  Mom played it a lot.

Michelle, by the Beatles - I was in Jr. High.  Sycamore, IL.  First time I danced with a girl.

American Pie, by Don McLean - Senior year of high school.  Dixon, IL.  Went on a road trip with my best buddy (now deceased) and it kept playing on the radio.  We were horsing around and making up our own lyrics.  Good times...

That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, by Carley Simon - I heard my wife sing it and get a standing ovation at a high school concert.

Operator, by Jim Croce - my wife and I saw him in concert before we were married.  Still one of my all-time favorite performers.

Breakfast In America (album), by Supertramp - I had begun teaching and coaching at Barron.  Our whole family attended every wrestling meet.  Our one year old son loved going to the home meets, at which the high school kids kept playing this album over the P.A. system, during warmups.  He called it "wrestling music."

Outfit by the Drive by Truckers -

I can never hear this song without thinking about my dad - it just perfectly sums him up and is just sounds like him talking to me when I left home.  Every time I get to the line of "wealthy man's paint" I tear up - he was an automobile bodyman who specialized in painting (and really good at it) and told me several times his biggest wish was that I would go to college - I can really just hear his voice in the song

Beautiful Tonight by Eric Clapton - 1st dance at my wedding with my wife

Brown Eyed Boy by Martin Zellar (of Gear Daddies Fame) - makes me think of my sons

I Was Wrong by Social Distortion - Was a huge Social Distortion fan and when this song came out it coincided with my own growing up/maturing and owning up to my past mistakes.  Not even close to the bands best song - but was very timely in my life and honestly, I figured if Mike Ness could grow into adulthood so could I ;D

Wild Horses - Rolling Stones - another transition song - heard it an loved it and went from being a primary punk/metal guy to opening up my mind to a whole lot more - became huge fan of alt-country, Americana,  cow punk, rock country, blues, and folk music because of this song.

We've has some major construction in our district lately; and, as I perused the "junk" pile. I saw the old mobile phonograph that brought me back to elementary school. Now I'm looking for great copies of "Chicken Fat", "The Hokie Pokie" and, hopefully, the square dance record our teacher always played.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

I'm pretty sure I have a "45rpm" of Chicken Fat around here... somewhere...
Hokie Pokie, most likely not.

Oh, I sometimes forget you were the PE guru of H2O-town. The little goslings with chicken fat, eh?

Jeez, when I heard the tune on that commercial, I almost freaked. My son now loves that silly song.
