Champions will also receive a T-shirt...

We have also had a few questions about our Takedown Tournament on Saturday night.  The takedown tourney is walk-ins only.  You must pre-register for our Sunday Tournament on trackwrestling.com . USA Cards are needed for both and will be available for purchase.

We are extremely pleased to announce the 4th Annual Portage Kick Off Classic registration is  steadily moving toward the cap limit for wrestlers. For those who have attended in the past and those that would like to attend for the first time we expect registration to be closed no later than Friday afternoon/evening.  Brackets will be posted Saturday night after our takedown tournament.

For many of the year groupings (2000&2001, 2002&2003, 2004&2005,2006&2007, 2008-2010)  and weights  there is a good array of state placers & qualifiers all the way to beginners to provide your wrestlers with a complete 5 man bracket of comparable talent.

Thankfully, there are no weather concerns this weekend, so do not hesitate to get in while spots are still available.

On behalf of the Portage Youth Wrestling Club Thank You for Considering our Tournament

On behalf of the Portage Youth Wrestling Program, the Tournament Directors Chris Arnold and Myself wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to all who attended the 4th Annual Portage Kick Off Classic Tournament this weekend.  We are very pleased to say through preregistration we had almost 400 kids from 90 different clubs and 3 states compete this year... that's crazy to have that many different clubs represented at one tourney.

Some highlights:

-Bracketing was completed Friday night and posted by Saturday evening,
-Wrestling began slightly before 9:00AM. (A pre-registration tournament is the best way to go.)
-74, 5 man brackets were all completed by the end of Friday night, 9 + hours were spent to get comparable talent in each bracket to provide a challenging yet fair bracket for all.  While we are aware of a few mistakes, we were really pleased with the resulting balanced quality in 95% of the brackets on Sunday.
-Wrestling was completed at 1:30
-Kids seemed to love the high quality custom "Warrior Pins" for falls, Champions took home a nice 3-D plaque, Champion T-shirt and Bracket Board.
-A positive atmosphere was present promoting youth wrestling all day.  The kids, coaches, and parents displayed good sportsmanship all day, while we strived to maintain only 3 mat side guests per wrestler providing a high quality environment for the wrestler and his guests both mat side and in the stands.

Improvements for next year:

- Due to a few very fixable protocol issues, a "bottleneck" developed with awards.  We whole heartily apologize to those who had to wait. Measures have already been discussed to remedy this for next year.
- Longer than desired lines for weigh-ins, skin and nail checks will be remedied with more stations and a new layout for next year too.
-Received an abundance of calls on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning from people trying to get into the tournament after pre-registration closed on Friday evening. This is very unfortunate as we wish we could have registered everyone; nevertheless, bracketing began Friday evening and was complete by Saturday morning.

The Portage Youth Wrestling Program is committed to promoting youth wrestling in a positive light, while providing a high quality tournament for all those attending.  Thanks to those of you who filled out our survey and provided your valuable feedback to assist us in this endeavor. As such improvements will be made every year to refine our tournament.
Good luck the rest of the season.
