Wiekamp and Einerson Earn WIAC Honors

Madison, Wis. - University of Wisconsin-La Crosse freshman Samantha Wiekamp of Clear Lake, S.D. (Deuel) and junior Kasey Einerson of Wisconsin Rapids (H.S.) have been selected the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) All-Around Gymnast and WIAC Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Wiekamp, competing in her first collegiate meet, captured the all-around title (37.050) at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational January 9.  She also recorded second-place finishes in the vault (9.450), balance beam (9.575) and floor exercise (9.600).  Wiekamp helped lead UW-L to the team title.

The Eagles return to action Friday, January 16 at the San Jose State University (Calif.) Triangular at 9 p.m. (Central).

Einerson won all nine of his matches between December 21 and January 10 to improve to 15-0 on the season.  He went 3-0 at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Duals December 21, recording all three victories by fall.  Einerson defeated Keith Thomas of Pacific University (Ore.), Steven Gutschenritter of Buena Vista University (Iowa) and Josh Donkle of Coe College (Iowa).

He then earned a win by fall over Duane Richards of Upper Iowa University January 2.

At the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals January 9-10, Einerson went 5-0 in helping lead UW-L to a fifth-place team finish.  He won by decision (7-6) over Josh Evans of Wilkes University (Pa.), by decision (5-0) over Nick Bova of Wabash College (Ind.) and by major decision (12-4) over Daniel Pak of Ithaca College (N.Y.) January 9.  Pak is ranked sixth in NWCA.  Einerson then won by fall over Donkle of Coe (Iowa) and by decision over Will Keeter of Augsburg College (Minn.) January 10. Keeter is ranked ninth in the country.  Einerson has recorded 11 of his 15 wins in 2014-15 by fall.

UW-La Crosse 48, UW-Oshkosh 3

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, earned a 48-3 victory at UW-Oshkosh Friday night in Kolf Sports Center.  The Eagles improve to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans drop to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

UW-L earned its 24th straight dual win over UW-Oshkosh with Friday night's victory.  The Eagles had five wins by fall and three by technical fall Friday.

Nelson Baker opened the dual with a win by fall (3:28) over Rashaam Hill at 125-pounds to give UW-L a 6-0 advantage. The Eagles made it 11-0 as Dustin Weinmann won by technical fall (16-0) over Jonathan Flores at 133-pounds and Austin Schoen gave UW-L a 14-0 lead as he won by decision (7-4) over UW-Oshkosh's Craig Mason.  Weinmann is ranked 10th in the NWCA.

The Titans got on the board at 149-pounds with Lance Arendt winning by decision (4-1) over the Eagles' Chase Stiener. UW-L then took the last six matches with four coming by fall.  Derek Weinmann won by fall (1:37) over Hunter Mulock at 157-pounds to give the Eagles a 20-3 lead.  Travis Hettinga followed with a win by technical fall (16-0) over Parker Knueppel at 165-pounds to make it 25-3.

Jarrett Hoeppner and Richard Carlson earnd back-to-back wins by fall to give UW-L a 37-3 lead. Hoeppner defeated Michael Berg by fall at 174-pounds (4:54) while Carlson, ranked fifth in the NWCA, defeated Korey Kleinhans at 184-pounds (2:32).

The Eagles' Eric Twohey, also ranked fifth in the country, followed with a win by technical fall (16-1) at 197-pounds and Zach Tooley finished the dual with a win by fall (5:53) over Matt Veneskey at 285-pounds.

Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed eighth at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles finished with 47.5 team points while Wartburg College (Iowa) took the team title with 149.5.  A total of 13 teams competed.

UW-L's Sean O'Neil placed second at 174-pounds Saturday with a 3-1 record.  After receiving a first-round bye, O'Neil won by fall (4:22) over Jamal Vaughns of Luther College (Iowa).  He then won by decision (6-1) over Jordan Richardson of Augustana College (Ill.) in the quarterfinals and advanced to the title match with a win by decision (4-3) over Tyrell Martin of Augsburg College (Minn.) in the semifinals. O'Neil dropped the championship match at 174-pounds by decision (4-0) to Nick Fuller of Wartburg College (Iowa).

Two other wrestlers placed Saturday for the Eagles as Cody Endres finished fourth at 285-pounds and Ryan Bonikowske was fifth at 184. Endres had a first-round bye before winning his next two matches, defeating Clayton Jennings of Luther (Iowa) by decision (3-2) and Eric Tucker of Cornell (Iowa) by decision (6-4) in the quarterfinals.  He dropped his semifinal match by major decision (12-4) to eventual champion Donald Longendyke of Augsburg (Minn.) in the semifinals.  Endres came back to defeat Tyler Ortmann of Cornell (Iowa) by decision (7-4) in the consolation bracket before losing by decision (7-0) to Lance Evans of Wartburg (Iowa) in the third-place match.

Bonikowske also received a first-round bye at 184-pounds.  He then won by major decision (11-1) over Gannon Jordahl of Luther (Iowa) in his next match.  Bonikowske lost by fall (1:42) to eventual champion Devin Peterson of Wartburg (Iowa) before winning two straight matches by decision in the consolation round.  He won by decision (4-2) over Sebastian Larson of Augsburg (Minn.) and by decision (6-4) over Derek Stork of Luther (Iowa). Bonikowske lost by major decision (8-0) ot Kyle Fank of Wartburg (Iowa) before earning fifth-place with a win by forfeit over Phil Woods of Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.).

Other results for UW-L Saturday included Martino Balsiger (133-pounds); Clark Doyle (165); Andrew Dayland (165), Thurston Schuster (174) and Sean Ward (197) each finishing 2-2.  Doyle earned both of his wins by major decision; Dayland had one win by fall and one by major decision and Schuster had both victories by fall.

The Eagles' Mitch Anderson went 1-2 at 174-pounds with his victory coming by technical fall while Aaron Sweeney went 0-2 at 149-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, January 22 hosting second-ranked UW-Whitewater at 6:30 p.m.

Wheaton, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, earned a pair of wins at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Duals Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles defeated the University of Dubuque (Iowa) by the score of 30-3 and host Wheaton (Ill.) by the score of 39-3.  UW-L improves to 15-3 on the season and extended its winning streak to six straight.  The Eagles captured 18 of 20 matches Saturday.

In the 30-3 win over Dubuque (Iowa), the Spartans took a 3-0 lead as Joey Cisneros won by decision (5-4) over Ryan Weinmann at 125-pounds.  The Eagles took the next nine matches.  Dustin Weinmann, ranked 10th in the NWCA, tied the dual at 3-3 as he won by decision (10-7) over Nicholas Rivera at 133-pounds.  UW-L's Austin Schoen made it 6-3 with a win by decision (3-2) over Dubuque's (Iowa) Stephen Rosenberg at 141.

Kasey Einerson, ranked second in the NWCA at 149-pounds, earned a win by decision (10-3) over ninth-ranked Brian Travis for a 9-3 advantage.  Derek Weinmann followed with a win by major decision (11-1) over Adrian Collier at 157-pounds to give UW-L a 13-3 lead.

Tyler Schneider and Alex Friedman recorded back-to-back wins by decision (8-2) for UW-L as Schneider defeated Terry Kubski at 165-pounds and Friedman beat Manny Mendoza at 174.  Schneider is ranked sixth in the NWCA. UW-L's Richard Carlson, ranked fifth in the country, gave the Eagles a 22-3 lead wiht a win by decision (9-2) over Elton Turnage-Manuel at 184-pounds.  Eric Twohey, also ranked fifth in the NWCA for UW-L, earned a technical fall (18-3, 7:00) over Nathan Cristion at 197-pounds to make it 27-3 and Zach Tooley finished the dual with a win by decision (4-3) at Daniel Howell at 285-pounds.

In its 39-3 victory over Wheaton (Ill), UW-L also took nine of the 10 matches. Ryan Weinmann opened with a win by decision (8-4) over Carlos Fuentez at 125-pounds followed by Dustin Weinmann winning by technical fall (16-0, 5:50) over Tom Foy at 133.  Schoen received a forfeit at 141-pounds to give UW-L a 14-0 advantage.

Einerson made it 20-0 as he won by fall (1:59) over Campbell Morton at 149-pounds.   Derek Weinmann won by decision (10-5) over Mark Savenok at 157-pounds and Schneider followed with a win by decision (9-7) over Stephen Aiello at 165-pounds to give the Eagles a 26-0 lead.

Wheaton (Ill.) earned its lone win at 174-pounds as Frank Aiello won by decision (4-0) over Jarrett Hoeppner.  Carlson won by decision (4-3) over Dan Olsen at 184-pounds to give UW-L a 29-3 lead.  Twohey earned a win by major decision (10-1) over Mikey Swider at 197-pounds and Tooley won by forfeit at 285-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, January 22 hosting second-ranked UW-Whitewater at 6:30 p.m.

UW-L's student-athletes posted the highest combined grade point average among the nine WIAC institutions in 2013-14 at 3.240.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 348, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better.
