Went to see John Prine perform Saturday night at The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee.
John Prine is a singer/songwriter out of the 70's.  I have liked John Prines music since 1977.  Three friends and I attended the concert together.  I had a good seat.  I had not seen him perform in person before.  I had a great time enjoying the concert.
I also had a very unexpected surprise on Friday evening regarding John Prine.  I had known, but totally forgotten John Prine was performing in Green Bay Friday night.  The coaches convention and my room were at the Hyatt on Main (KI Convention Center) in Green Bay.  At 6:00pm Friday night I was waiting for the elevator in the Hyatt.  There was one gentleman waiting for the elevator whom I recognized, but could not place.  I was thinking it was a wrestling coach, but couldn't come up with a name or school.  About eight of us entered the elevator.  I looked across to the far side of the elevator and it suddenly dawned on me, 'that is John Prine'.  I was so surprised and excited.  I pointed and blurted out 'JOHN PRINE' ... he said 'Yup'... I told him I'd be attending his Saturday concert in Milwaukee.  He said 'I'm playing here tonight'.  I told him I couldn't make tonight.  I asked for permission and then asked a kid in the elevator to take my picture with John Prine. I was so excited...  I could not believe it, I was meeting John Prine.  I even got off the elevator on the wrong floor. Too funny... He is a bit obscure today so almost no one knew who he was... except me.  So no one cared until I arrived at dinner and Dave and Sue McCarthy and Don and Kris Hale knew who John Prine was.

Prine is my favorite song writer. He and Tom T. Hall, just seem to have my number.

Seen him twice, now and relish the fact he is so much better live than studio.

The man's a humble genius and probably the most clever song writer I've ever heard.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Jesse Winchester was another favorite... Never got to see him in person...  :(

It is amazing for how influencial of a songwriter John Prine has been how few people are familar with his work.

Yes... people (most) have no clue.  I am just lucky my buddy Kevin Mosher shared his vinyl back in the 70's.. or I would probably be in the dark as well.

I love Bonnie and her duet with John to do Angel From Montgomery is one of the greatest tunes ever sung, IMHO. The cool thing about seeing him live, is you get the good stories and acoustics. I've seen him, Violent Femmes (among) many others at the pabst, and just love the acoustics of the place.

One of my favorite places to go.

If I had to pick a favorite song.

It got so hot, last night, I swear
You couldn't hardly breathe
Heat lightning burnt the sky like alcohol
I sat on the porch without my shoes
And I watched the cars roll by
As the headlights raced
To the corner of the kitchen wall

[Chorus:]
Mama dear
Your boy is here
Far across the sea
Waiting for
That sacred core
That burns inside of me
And I feel a storm
All wet and warm
Not ten miles away
Approaching
My Mexican home

My God! I cried, it's so hot inside
You could die in the living room
Take the fan from the window
Prop the door back with a broom
The cuckoo clock has died of shock
And the windows feel no pane
The air's as still
As the throttle on a funeral train

[Chorus:]

My father died on the porch outside
On an August afternoon
I sipped bourbon and cried
With a friend by the light of the moon
So its hurry! hurry! Step right up
It's a matter of life or death
The sun is going down
And the moon is just holding its breath

Tadeschi Trucks band are really good. I wish they'd tour somewhere close to here. That is a show I'd go see. These days there aren't too many people I'd pay to see. They are one of them.
