College Wrestling: Upsets Power Pokes To 3-0 Mark In Northeast Duals
Wyoming earns two shutout dual wins
TROY, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2014) Victories in 27 of 30 matches paced the University of Wyoming wrestling team to one of the more dominant days in recent memory Saturday, as the Cowboys went 3-0 in the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals.
Wyoming (3-2 overall) and head coach Mark Branch gained some crucial momentum after beginning the season with two dual losses. The Pokes began with a 39-0 win over Buffalo and added a 33-0 win over Binghamton. The notable win came in the second dual of the day, when UW overpowered No. 21 Old Dominion in a 24-10 upset. The Cowboys were victorious in all but three matches for the day, including seven bonus-point wins.
"It was nice to win 27 out of 30 (matches)," Branch said. "Our team found out what they are capable of with the right attitude and mindset. We haven't shut out a team in a long time so to do it twice and have some upsets in there was special. We wrestled an inspired match against a tough Old Dominion team and it was necessary."
Branch improved his dual record to 66-30 in seven seasons, just the fifth coach in UW history to post more than 65 victories. Branch accomplished that thanks to some notable wins from the competitors under his tutelage. Sophomore Cole Mendenhall earned the biggest win of his career by toppling No. 8 Chris Mecate (Old Dominion) in a 5-3 decision in sudden victory at 141 pounds. He added two more wins to go 3-0 in the event.
Junior heavyweight Tanner Harms aided the cause, outworking two ranked opponents on his way to a 2-0 mark. Harms took out 18th-ranked Jacob Henderson of Old Dominion in a 2-0 decision, following up with a 9-6 win over No. 12 Tyler Deuel of Binghamton in the day's last match. It was Harms' third victory over a ranked foe this year.
"Tanner looked composed in picking up two nice wins over ranked opponents," Branch said.
Wyoming's Tyler Cox (ranked No. 9) tallied two narrow victories over ranked wrestlers to finish 3-0 for the event at 125 pounds. He upended Buffalo's Max Soria, who was 14th at 125 pounds. Cox entered the third period down 12-5, but reeled off 12 points to tie things up at 17-all at the end of regulation. Cox secured a takedown in the sudden-victory period to win a wild 19-17 affair. Against Old Dominion, he finished on a scoring move with just seconds to go for the 10-9 decision against 17th-ranked Brandon Jeske.
Six Cowboys were unbeaten at 3-0, including Cox, sophomore Drew Templeman (133 pounds), Mendenhall, redshirt freshman Archie Colgan (157), senior Andy McCulley (174) and senior Shane Woods at 197. Three Cowboys went 2-1, including sophomore Jake Elliott (149), senior Dakota Friesth (165), sophomore Benjamin Stroh at 184. Senior heavyweight Leland Pfeifer was 1-0 in his only action, a 23-9 major decision against Buffalo.
"The team, overall, showed toughness on top, which is new for us this season," Branch added. "Our last two weeks of training have been the hardest. They have tested us mentally and physically but they have made us better and the guys need to see that. It's more enjoyable to learn more about ourselves in a victory."
The Cowboys will have a week off from competition and return to the mats to face Air Force onDec. 11 in Laramie.
