With a wild 19-18 criteria win over then No. 4 Ohio State at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, Virginia Tech vaulted four spots to No. 6 in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Hokies (4-0) won by just a single point on the dual's third tie-breaking criteria, most match points. The loss dropped Ohio State (4-1) three spots to No. 7.
No. 1 Iowa (3-0) opened with three wins at home against NAIA Baker, Division III Cornell College and NJCAA Iowa Central. Minnesota (2-0) remained at No. 2 with wins over Grand Canyon and Michigan State. Cornell (1-0) topped Oklahoma to remain third, while Penn State (3-0) shut out Clarion and moved into the No. 4 spot.
Missouri (3-0) beat Old Dominion and moved into the No. 5 spot. Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Nebraska (4-0) and Oklahoma State (2-0) remained in the top 10, while Lehigh (3-1) made its first appearance of the season in the nation's top 10.
The Big Ten still has five of the nation's top 10 teams and eight of the top 25.
Virginia (5-1) lost on Monday 30-7 to Ohio State and slid three spots to No. 12. A loss to unranked Purdue dropped Northern Iowa (1-1) four spots to No. 22, while N.C. State (4-1) moved into the top 25 after pushing then No. 7 Nebraska to the wire in a 16-15 loss to the Huskers. N.C. State is one of four ACC teams ranked. The Mid-American Conference also has four ranked schools.
Rider (3-1) moved into the Top 25 after a 20-19 criteria victory over then No. 18 Wisconsin on Friday. It was the first dual in Division I since the tie-breaking rules were redefined two years ago to be decided by the fourth criteria – first takedown. Rider joins Edinboro as the only two EWL teams ranked in the Top 25.
Wisconsin and North Dakota State fell out of the Top 25.
The USA Today/NWCA Division  I Coaches Poll is a dual meet ranking.
