Great addition to their program.  This kid is a real gem.  Sounds like a good fit.

Some days it's hardly worth chewing through the restraints!

Northern Iowa moves into Top 10, Wisconsin back into Top 25 in latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll

Wisconsin's upset of then-No. 7 Illinois was the big upset this past week as there were only a few notable moves in the latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.

Penn State (5-0) won two weekend duals, beating Boston University 34-6 and No. 11 Pittsburgh 28-9. Both duals were wrestled in front of sold-out crowds. Penn State set the NCAA record for attendance in Sunday's win over the Panthers. The announced crowd of 15,996 was also the largest event held at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions usually compete in Rec Hall, a more intimate facility, which seats 6,500 fans.

Second-ranked Minnesota improved to 4-0 after beating No. 5 Oklahoma State 16-15 in Stillwater, Okla., on Sunday. The return of two-time All-American Kevin Steinhaus to the Golden Gophers lineup was crucial as Steinhaus picked up the dual's only bonus victory, a 14-5 major decision over Jordan Rogers at 184 pounds.

Iowa (5-0) got a scare from No. 15 Edinboro, but the Hawkeyes had enough firepower to get past the Fighting Scots 22-19.

Oklahoma (5-0) won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and held at the No. 4 position, while Oklahoma State (1-2), as noted above, lost to Minnesota. It was the Cowboys' second 16-15 loss this season.

Illinois (6-2) fell out of the Top 10 after being upset 19-18 by unranked Wisconsin over the weekend. The Fighting Illini fell from No. 7 to No. 11 this week, allowing Northern Iowa (3-0) to move into the Top 10 for the first time under coach Doug Schwab.

Ohio State (4-0) moved to No. 7 behind Cornell (3-0), while Missouri (2-0) and Nebraska (5-0) each moved up one spot to No. 8 and No. 9.

Wisconsin (8-3) reentered the Top 25, coming in at No. 22, after its win over Illinois.

Ten of the Big Ten's 12 teams are ranked this week, including five of the Top 10. Three of the four Big 12 teams are ranked, while the ACC and EWL each have three teams ranked in the Top 25. The EIWA and the MAC each have two teams ranked.

CEDAR FALLS – Doug Schwab didn't want to make this bigger than it was.

But the smile on his face told the truth. It was a big win for the University of Northern Iowa wrestling team – and program.

"It means we're 10-0 and we want to keep that roll going," the UNI coach said last night after the No. 5 Panthers smacked No. 16 Iowa State, 24-13, before a soldout college wrestling crowd of 2,020 in the West Gym.

The victory was UNI's first over its "big brother" since 2004 and ended a 10-match losing streak to the Cyclones.

"Personally," he added with that wry smile, "I wanted to get a win against them. We wanted to continue to make a statement."

The Panthers (10-0) won five in a row after ISU's Kyven Gadson opened the dual at 197 pounds with an 11-3 major decision over Bail Minto.

No little brother here: UNI wrestling smacks ISU

Panthers smack Iowa State on wrestling mat, 24-13

Blaize Cabell, Dylan Peters, Joe Colon, Joey Lazor and Tyler Patten all won for UNI, giving the Panthers a 21-4 edge with four bouts left.

"It was awesome," said Lazor, who decked Gabe Moreno in 1 minute, 59 seconds at 141. "The train is on its track and we're rolling."

Peters scored a major decision, 11-2, over Earl Hall at 125 and top-ranked Colon (24-1) used three takedowns and nine nearfall points for a 16-1 technical fall over Shayden Terukina at 133.

Those three bonus wins, ISU Coach Kevin Jackson said, were the difference.

"You can't give up bonus points," he said.

Schwab and the Panther wrestlers credited the stand-room-only crowd.

"The engery, the atmosphere, that's as good as it gets," Schwab said. "Our guys feed off it. They love it."

Lazar sure did.

"The fans were on top of the mat it felt like," he said. "They fueled the train."

ISU pulled with 21-13 with three wins in a row from 157 through 174, but Ryan Loder ended the dual with a 5-0 win over Lelund Weatherman at 184.

No more "little brother" in Cedar Falls.

"I didn't see a little brother out there," Schwab said. "It was fun."

The Panthers host Kent State today at 1 p.m.
