John Klein: Foxcatcher was emotional for OU premier audience

NORMAN — At the end of a special premier showing of the movie "Foxcatcher" a small crowd sat speechless, the theater thick with emotion, on Sunday night at the University of Oklahoma Student Union.

Wrestling legend Dan Gable sat motionless, nodding his head as people stopped by to greet him.

Others wept openly.

In a room full of people who knew the story and characters in the movie, Foxcatcher is difficult to watch.

But, it is a terrific movie and a crowd dominated by wrestlers, wrestling coaches and the wrestling community were overwhelmed by the powerful story of amateur wrestling stars Dave and Mark Schultz and a millionaire benefactor.

I'll leave the movie reviews to the experts like my friend Michael Smith, the Tulsa World's terrific film critic.

But, as someone that knew just about everyone involved in the story of the movie, it was fantastic.

There's no doubt why Foxcatcher is getting a lot of Oscar buzz. It isn't a wrestling movie. Yes, it involves the sport of wrestling but it more about power, class, money and complicated family issues. It is a fascinating movie.

It just happens to be very dark, sad and emotional for those that knew this story and the characters in it long before anyone thought of making a movie about it.

The Schultz brothers wrestled at OU.

Actor Mark Ruffalo plays Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz, who was murdered by eccentric millionaire John du Pont in 1996. If you knew Schultz, or ever saw him wrestle, he had very distinctive mannerisms. He walked somewhat pigeon-toed and somewhat slumped over. Rufalo had him down perfect.

"Mark was always asking me how Dave did certain things because he wanted to portray him as accurately as possible and he did," said Nancy Schultz, Dave's widow. "I know it is a hard story, especially for so many people at this showing because so many of these people knew Dave very well."

Actor Channing Tatum played Mark Schultz, Dave's brother who is at the heart of the movie's story. Tatum seemed to capture Mark's shy, quiet nature.

Nancy Schultz, who witnessed her husband's murder, and Alexander Schultz, Dave's son who was named after Russian wrestling legend Alexander Medved, spoke to the crowd prior to the OU premier of the movie. They told several stories about the making of the film. She was a consultant. She was played by Siena Miller in the movie.

Among those that attended the special showing was Dr. Mike Sheets, a Stilwell veterinarian who was a collegiate and Olympic rival of the Schultz brothers.

"That's a tough story to watch," said Sheets. Mark Schultz' 1988 Olympic Trials victory over Sheets, who was a third-year student at the OSU College of Veterinary Mediciane in 1988, was part of the movie.

OU wrestling coach Mark Cody, former OU coach Jack Spates and many former Sooner wrestlers, including two-time Olympian Melvin Douglas, attended the showing. So did Oklahoma State Senior Associate Athletic Director Dave Martin (a former wrestling All-American at Iowa State, OU Executive Associate Athletics Director Larry Naifeh and OU Director of Athletic Compliance Jason Leonard (a former OU wrestler from Perry).

A large group from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, including executive director Lee Roy Smith, also drove through a snowstorm to attend the Norman premier.

"That is tough for all of us to watch but it is a great movie," said Smith.

Cody said many of the current OU wrestling team also came to the showing.

"One of the most important things I talk to our wrestlers about is the history of wrestling at our school," said Cody. "OU has a sensational history and tradition in wrestling.

"The Schultz brothers are important figures in our history. I want them to know the story."

I think this is a cautionary tale that applies to any situation in which a person is allowed to buy unwarranted access and power.  It's of special interest to us, because this particular example applies to the modern history of our beloved sport.

Yeah it's out and if it didn't have wrestling in it, i'm not sure I would even be interested.   Although I here a few good performances.   I will wait for the DVD
