Thanks, Harley! It was great to see Steven get his 100th career win in front of a home crowd on the Bison mat.  It is a young team this season with some outstanding red-shirt freshman.  It was cool to see five Wisconsin natives start two weeks ago against Missouri.  It is just a great group of wrestlers on and off the mat.

Best of luck to Zach on his new team this season!

The family and I traveled to Fargo to watch the Bison Open a couple of weekends ago. Congrats to Steven Monk on winning the 165lb. title. It was so nice to watch him and the many other Wisconsin kids that now currently wrestle for NDSU! Watching Steven dominate from the top position, made me appreciate all the work he must have put in. At one point I actually felt sorry for his opponents when he scored a takedown on them because I knew their battle was just beginning. Caught myself several times elbowing my son and pointing to Steven and saying thats what a complete wrestler looks like. (I also found myself wondering if Mr. Weber happens to mention to Mr. Monk in practice if he would happen to know who currently holds the Wiscosin high school record for most career victories...212 is more than 208 right? Or shouldn't a 125lber mess with a 165lber?)
Another point that became obvious throughout the day was, what a difference depth in a line-up can make. Minnesota not only had the most match-ups versus their fellow wrestlers but by far the most brutal match-ups. It would have been hard to guess that the 149lb finals match was a match between teammates. Talk about a physical bout. NDSU coaches also had to be pleased with the competiveness between "starters" and red-shirts or " back-ups". With several victories coming from non-starters. (Bengston is the real deal).

OREM, Utah -- North Dakota State University 157-pound redshirt freshman Matt Gray (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Tuesday by the league.

Gray had a big weekend for NDSU at Northern Illinois' Northern Duals last Saturday as he went a perfect 2-0 with a first-period fall over a ranked foe.

Gray opened up his run at the Northern Duals with a 7-5 decision over Jarrett Jensen of No. 17 Northern Iowa. He then helped the Bison defeat NIU in the final dual of the day by pinning Andrew Morse, who was ranked 11th in the country in last week's AWN poll, in just 1:16. Gray's pin over Morse sparked the Bison, as they went on to win four consecutive matches in their 21-16 come-from-behind victory over the Huskies.

The conference honor is Gray's first of his career and with the two wins he improves to 2-1 on the young season

Matts a great kid.  No one worked harder to get where Matt is today than Matt.  Great dad also!   Congrats Mathew!

Sophomore heavyweight Evan Knutson won the final match of the day for the Bison, taking a 6-4 decision over UNI's Blaize Cabell.
Northern Illinois opened up an 11-3 lead on NDSU in the day's final dual, but Gray registered a first-period pin of Andrew Morse – ranked No. 11 in the nation at 157 pounds – to spark the Bison. Monk, Zillmer and 184-pound junior Kurtis Julson followed up with decisions to build an 18-11 lead for NDSU.
Leading 18-16 heading into the final match against the Huskies, Knutson held on for a 4-3 decision over Jarred Torrence on riding time advantage following the second tiebreaker period.
Gray, Monk, Zillmer and Knutson all went 2-0 for NDSU on the day.
NDSU will travel to Brookings, S.D., on Nov. 30 for a non-conference dual with South Dakota State.

FARGO, N.D. — Iowa State's Mike Moreno lost a featured top-six showdown with North Dakota State's Steven Monk Saturday night but the Cyclones won six of the 10 bouts to grab a 22-13 college wrestling victory.

Moreno, ranked sixth by WIN Magazine, lost 6-2 to the No. 4 Monk. During last season's dual between the clubs, Moreno was pinned by Monk, but avenged that loss by pinning Monk at the ASICS University Nationals last summer in Akron, Ohio.

A season long documentary of Steven Monk and the Bison Wrestling Team.  For a wrestler that was never really recruited to a Division 1 school...the community of Fargo/North Dakota State gave Steven a chance on the mat. The Bison's are a great team of wrestlers on and off the mat.  For any wrestler that has hopes and dreams of wrestling Division 1, don't give up. If the links will not come up they are on "youtube" Steven Monk on the Brink.

Thanks, Tom for always supporting the Bison's and all of the Wisconsin kids on this team. I was ahead of you for once :D Steven just graduated from NDSU, he begins Graduate School in January.  Proud parents here! He has worked hard in wrestling and he never wanted to give up his 3 sports in High School to focus on just this sport.  He is coming down the home stretch with his college wrestling.
