WIAA sports: Measure to open summer coaching contact for basketball, volleyball coaches goes down to defeat

STEVENS POINT -- Basketball and volleyball coaches will continue to be limited to five days of unrestricted contact with their athletes during the summer months after a measure to relax the rule was soundly defeated Wednesday at the WIAA Annual Meeting.
Delegates to the meeting voted 242-94 against a proposal to offer unlimited non-school contact in the summer. Had it passed, coaches in those two sports would have been able to assemble with their athletes -- in skills development or coaching them at summer tournaments -- provided that no school resources were used for the camp, clinic or competition.
As a result of the vote, coaches in those sports will only be able to work with their athletes for up to five days of their choosing -- generally known as "contact days" -- in the summer.
Unrestricted coaching contact remains for coaches in bsaeball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and wrestling.
