If its Koy Hopke, Shane Griffith, Angelo Ferrari or Dillan Johnson, I agree.  Matt, I know you know.  Am I warm?

Hopke would be a potentially program altering move.

Don't wanna get too excited. Hopke is gonna be different. He has a chance to do things no HWT has ever done...IMO.

That would be amazing but a shocker of miracle on ice, Buster Douglas or Rulon Gardner type proportions. I believe someone said that Askren had hinted on FRL that he would be going to PSU.

Great, Awesome??  Pretty underwhelming to sign a D3 guy with one year of eligibility and announce it to the world as "great", even if he's a top D3 guy.  Bono's recruiting continues to underwhelm with 2024 offering up so many opportunities with the best Wisconsin class ever, and 5 of top 10 guys having visited, but Bono keeps whiffing.  I hope he's a walk-on as there is no reason to tie up scholarship money on D3 talent and non-elite prospects.  Wish Bono would just stop with the "great" posts as it just hurts his credibility and play it low key like all the other Big Ten coaches.

So he replaces Tyler Dow for one year, and then he's gone.   I don't see him with a winning record against Big Ten competition and a big longshot to AA.  He's brought in like Weiler and McNally to try to help win a few duels against weak competition.  I just don't think this is the type of move that helps the program in the long term.

They are trying to improve at every weight wherever they can and improve the depth. I suspect he will be the best 184 they have for next year and if he not he will not be in the lineup. They are definitely lacking at 184 and this should help some. Was one of their biggest question marks for the upcoming season. I agree not a long term solution.

Awesome to see a WI kid come home!

Also, Liegel is a D3 finalist, losing to Shinhoster, who took 2nd at Midlands, who beat Saldano 7-0.

Obviously not a guy a top big 10 school should throw much scholarship $ to, but good to have on the roster.  Will probably have a rough go of it against top guys in the big 10 similar to Dow.

What I think is disappointing here is that the dynamics in play create a negative vibe for Liegel's return to Wisconsin. Geezz, Bono is between a rock and a hard place with his "Great Day to be a Badger!" schtick - do it once and you are obligated to do it for every recruit coming in. If he decided some recruits weren't worthy of the announcement then he would be under-cutting their respective moment in the sun - and do it for everyone and he gets a bunch of forum cowboys grumbling because he didn't recruit the "second-coming."

Liegel shows up as perhaps the best shot for 184 for the Badgers next year and he is personally picked apart by posters as "not being enough."

Please, just have a little maturity and grace and give a kid some space; he's stepping up and challenging himself. I for one applaud him and appreciate him bringing his talent back to Wisconsin. Have a great season!

Spot on Nat! And let's let him prove he's all that, because it seems he has it in him.

Rutgers - Boom! UNI - It's always a great day when you add to the family.  #PantherTrain

I agree, it's a Great day to be a Badger.  He doesn't say I have a commitment from the #1 kid in the nation, he says the same thing every time. It means we are adding to the Badger family.

The issue is not Liegel. The issue is many posters know to be better than an 8-10th at best big 10 team, we need better recruits.

I'm excited for Liegel!  The top 184 pounders at D3 have shown they can compete with the top 184 pounders in D1 as evidenced by Shinnhoster!  Liegel is right up there!

Let's see what the 4th Liegel to put the W on his chest can do!

And many wrestling coaches (and now Luke Fickel) have a bat signal to alert of new recruits!  As Big Oil said, it's a great day anytime you add a high quality kid to the team!

I've asked before and I'll ask again, what does he WANT Bono to do?

Top 10 recruits=GREAT Day to be a Badger?
If you're 10-30 on an arbitrary rankings list, "VERY good Day to be a Badger?"
If you're say 30-70, "Hey, nice day to be a Badger.
70-100- "We've had better days, but it's not nothing."
Below 100 "Eh, don't expect anything from this kid..."

It's always a great day to be a Badger. DEAL WITH IT.

I'm wondering what else Estrada will have to do for you to concede...that kid is probably just a good Wrestler, but...I realized a while ago I don't actually care.

Shane Liegel transferring to Wisconsin marks the 4th Liegel to wrestle for the Badgers.

* Ralph Liegel started for the Badgers in the 80's and was finished in the NCAA Round of 12
* Scott Liegel qualified for the NCAAs in an exciting Big Ten tournament hosted by Wisconsin
* Seth Liegel was mostly a backup for the Badgers; he was a practice partner of Isaac Jordan

All four Liegels have been recruited by or wrestled for all of Wisconsin Head Coaches in the last 40+ years - Duane Kleven, Russ Hellickson, Andy Rein, Barry Davis and Chris Bono.

One of the toughest wrestling families in Southwest Wisconsin history. One of the great families to wrestle for the Badgers. Now Shane gets his shot.

" Wisconsin has a better 197 and HWT than Minnesota for college guys. Gable and Zillmer are what make a big difference. "

If Amos goes to 285, WI does not have a better 197 than Salazar.

Now that Gable back I doubt wisconsin Has a better HWT than mn

I would guess Salazar will stay 184 for a year and bet Nelson steps in at 197 then Nelson resorts his second year Salazar moves to 197 and after a redshirt year mcnelly moves in at 184. Then after 2 years the gopher will have mcnelly, Nelson and hopke for 3 years up top.

Just my thoughts and what will the badgers have to counter that? I hope someone.

174/184/197 has really struggled at NCAAs the last few years.  Many injuries.  Shane appears to be a really solid pickup (even if only for 1 year).

Welcome Max, hope you do well.  But for those that "love" the signing and think its a "great" signing, you might want to temper your expectations a bit and checkout Wrestlestat.  There, he has a slight losing record in D1 and has never wrestled at NCAAs before.  His most impressive wins might be Alex Cramer of CMU and Kyle Turley.  He also beat Rowley, but lost to Tyler Dow. Not a big risk as he only has one year left.

Just to give some context, Michigan signed Shane Griffith to wrestle at 174 (Cam Amine is at 165) and I expect he sees Wisconsin as a better opportunity.  Good luck!

Maylor has improved quite a bit since his Freshman year. He was ranked by Intermat last year (around 28th). Max had a winning record last season against tough competition.

A great pickup! One of the best wrestlers from Southwest Wisconsin in recent years.

Yes they just landed the top recruits in the nation at 184,197 and HWT. Word on the street they maybe landing another top 3 recruit at a lower weight plus they still have some really good recruits just wrapping up their redshirt year so......not saying they are PSU air.but Minnesota is holding their own in the recruiting and as a team.

The gopher wrestling club is loaded with upper weight kids. The gophers will do real well on the recruiting trail for upper weight kids.

Not shabby on the lower weight coaches either, not as stronge but good staff.

Not sure how deep the pockets are but they do well in raising money and getting athletes paid.

So, just for fun, since MN an WI are more comparable than say comparing with PSU or Iowa, let's compare what MN might have going on that the UW doesn't these days. More NIL $$? If so, how much and where is MN getting theirs from? RTC? Outside of Stevenson, what big names are stocking the shelf? Who is the RTC coach there?

Is this current surge a temporary bump or has MN been consistently surging in recent years?

Your combining 2 classes and they still are not all ranked #1. They got McEnelly who is #1 at 195 in 2023. Gavin Nelson who is the 4th best 220/285 in his 2023 class. Of course Hopke is #1 but he is class of 2024. What does that mean for Tabor? No one debates Minnesotas upper weights, but a lot of those good recruits who just wrapped up their redshirt year are now leaving. They lost Spratley, Jamison, and Nagao all who likely could have been starters this year and all highly ranked.  Spratley was a top 5 overall recruit in his class and Nagao showed he is a title threat.

Yeah, it wasn't long ago people were ringing the alarm bells asking what's going on at Minnesota, why are so many guys leaving...particularly their freshmen Nagao who took 5th in...one of the better weight classes in terms of depth. Vito, RBY, Fix, and McGee...who in a given year could easily be a NC.

I think all were ranked number 1 at one time. All top 5 which is very good to say the least.

Gophers still have some pretty good freshmen on the roster. Yes certainly losing nago, spratley and Jamieson does really hurt for sure but they still have some very good recruits in that freshmen class that redshirted this year. Plus a late recruit that is a sleeper and some verbal from some really good high schoolers have them on the map.

Landing wyatt d is a very nice recruit along with 3 other wisco sin kids makes the next 2 years good recruiting classes for the gophers.

Is Fugitt a transfer? Or just a kid who de-committed from OU and committed to UW. He's a 2023 guy, no?

AWESOME!

Great family and a kid from NW Wisconsin is joy to my ears and eyes!

Good get for sure!

Also Oklahoma must have a big changing of the guard going on. 2 pretty good recruits coming to Wisconsin that were for wr Oklahoma recruits!

Not a bad group if you are a mid-major program or aspire to stay out of last place in the Big Ten.  Not really seeing how you can expect a top ten team or a podium team like Bono has hyped he'd bring without any top 25 recruits.  Danny Sheen is not new.  He was on the Badger's roster last year.  Also, Zan Fuggitt is not a transfer, he is a former Oklahoma commit from the class of 2023 like Dylan Russo who switched after OU made a coaching change.  Also, you can add Shane Liegel, Simon Kruse and Royce Nilo to this list.

I agree it would be nice to see a top 10 or top 20 kid in every recruiting class, as they traditionally have a higher success rate then lower or unranked kids, but with the recent recruits/transfers, the staff is now bringing 10 new wrestlers into the program this upcoming season and the projected roster is up to 30 athletes with multiple wrestlers at every weight class. That is positive/refreshing news compared to hearing about kids transferring out and decommitting....I'll take it!

125 Simon Kruse
133 Zan Fugitt
133 Brock Bobzien
149 Julian George
149 Royce Nilo
157 Luke Mechler (Transfer)
174 Max Maylor (Transfer)
174 Lucas Condon
184 Shane Liegel (Transfer)
197/285 Dylan Russo
