Barnett looked methodical and never lost position dominating
Lamont was in position for upset but never even took a chance to go after the victory. Frustrating to see him not just go for it. Had last minute of regulation and 1+ minutes in sudden victory and did nothing.
Zargo... as expected. Fought but lost by fall.
Gomez looked tough. Rusty, not his 100 but man, he was letting it fly! Awesome to get the major.
Model doing Model things. 10-5 over Iowa!
At the halfway point, a very nice round going!
DJ doing DJ things. Fall in 1:24
Model with a huge win. That sets him up in a much better spot in the bracket!
So happy for Model! Hoping he can keep it going
Amos out with an injury
On Flo they mention 'chats'. If these are out there, where do I find them? (clueless here)
Like 'gopher chat'
badger chat
etc.
That was a heck of a first round by UW. About as well as they could have expected. The only bummmer was Amos' injury. Hopefully he can still wrestle this weekend. LaMont too, losing in overtime. Tough breaks.
But everything else went according to plan and Model, man, you knew he had it in him but he's been so up and down throughout his tenure at UW. Let's hope he ends on an up and becomes All-American. That would be wonderful!
Let's keep it going Bucky!
What happened to Amos?

Worst part for Lamont is now he has Ragusin just to stay alive. If he beat Latona he would have had the 22 seed to make the quarters.

No doctor here, but it looked like he either seperated or dislocated his shoulder. When he first hurt it, they did some strength tests and he grimiced quite a bit on the last test and it kind of looked like they said it was up to him. He went back out and the guy got him in an overhook and the match was immediately stopped because he was in such pain, almost like the guy was able to pull it out of the socket. It did not look good when they got him off the mat. He looked like he was hurting considerably.
I just go back to that Lamont match and what a round it could have been. He just looks like a guy that was hoping a transfer would rejuvenate his passion for wrestling and has not. What a great career but he just looks like he wants it to be over. He has put in a ton of work on the mat over a long time and huge respect for that so don't want it to come across like I am disrespecting him. My respect for him just wanted that storybook ending with a great last tournament
Definitely looked like a shoulder dislocation. Unfortunately these commonly require a surgical repair.
Amos is done. Already listed as medical defaulting for his wrestleback. That sucks.
Good first round but sad for Amos

Bummer for Lamont. He just didn't have the mojo this year. Amazing in 2021 he was in the semifinals and lost a 2-1 OT decision to Courtney from ASU for a chance to wrestle Lee in the finals.
Brutal loss for Barnett
Tough loss for Lamont- He certainly battled this match. Great career
Gomez blows his match with stupid mental mistake at end of 2nd period.
Barnett and Gomez losses were about as bad as can be at this level. They had the matches won
And then Zargo only needs an escape in 3rd period and cannot get it.
Ugly losses and very frustating!

What was he thinking? He is tied 2-2 with riding time and choice for the 3rd period. Why take a horrible shot with 12 seconds left literally handing a TD to his opponent?

agree! Zargo has to be able to get out in two minutes of wrestling
seems like no Badger can get out from the bottom. ouch!
Hope Dean shows up big!
great pin!
Hamiti looks like he is on a mission
Dean, putting the team on his back, and apposition on their back. Fun to watch.

Sitting 9th in points!
Hamiti vs O'Toole seems like a sure thing in semis
DJ lost to Amine in the dual. I think he wins this time.
If Barnett and Gomez both pulled out wins we could be sitting in 3rd-5th. We would be feeling different right now. Barnett with a tough match next round. He split with Kaylor last year at nationals.
If Gomez is healthy he can get on a roll and win a bunch tomorrow.
Go Trent.
I don't think any man looks more dangerous than Silas at 197 right now. The A-train has arrived and I'm all aboard
Not sure why Harvard wrestler did not choose down but good smart boring match by Hillger. Honestly looked like one of those matches that Hillger's weight gain helped him as Harvard wrestler was smaller. On more win to be an AA.
Not a great day but not a horrible day either. Still a path to AA for the guys on the back.
Barnett
Will have Kaylor of Oregon St
With a win he will have Miller or Medley
With another win most likely Ventresca in the bloodround
Gomez
Will have March of NDSU
With a win he will have Miller or Lamer
With another win he will have Murin in the bloodround
Model
Will have Swensen SDSU
With a win he will have Holschlag or Gallagher
With another win he will most likely have Lewan in the bloodround
Gomez made one stupid mistake but otherwise I was very surprised how much healthier he looked. Hopefully that knee wakes up tomorrow feeling good

Hillger is super on top, is my guess for the decision to go neutral.
Second round not as a good as the first but not a disaster either. Two wrestlers in the quarters and three more still going. Still have a shot at five AA's.
Dang Amos cannot catch a break!
UW in a pretty good spot tied for 10th, higher than I remember them being after the first day of nationals in a long time. But woulda, coulda, shoulda wins by Barnett and Zargo and yeah, their 3rd-5th. It stinks! The only way this program can breakthrough is by winning these close matches consistently. At least Hillger did so, so that's a hopeful sign.
Hopefully UW will have just as a good a tomorrow!
I don't understand getting taken down with 12 seconds left in the match, to put you down by 1 and just laying flat and accepting the loss. I would think in this tournament you would do everything in your power to attempt to get away even if your chances of doing so are next to none.

Yes, he made a bad decision but mistakes happen. He does look like a completely different wrestler than 2 weeks ago. I feel confident he can win a couple matches or more on the backside. Just glad he is able to compete.

I also would have liked to see some sort of fight there at least. Maybe a mental mistake and not knowing how much time was left but that was certainly a crushing takedown but so was giving up the reversal. He certainly wrestled hard until that final 12 seconds.
Going to be interesting where Gomez and Barnett are mentally today after those crushing defeats. Today is as much a mental test as a physical test. If Barnett can win his first one today I could see him getting on a roll. Gomez has a decent draw also

I watched it 3 times, his legs are straight, top guy had left arm across both legs at the upper thigh. Either way, not even an attempt to get up. His chances of getting away may have been 3% but laying there and doing nothing makes it 100% certain you have no chance. I'm not trying to bring the man down, he is obviously an excellent wrestler. Doing this mid season is fine I guess, but in this tournament I just figured you don't quit until you hear the whistle when you are only down by 1. He is not the first wrestler I have seen give up with time left, he won't be the last but I just don't get why they do it. If he would have been down by 2 I think I would be better with it.

They have both been here before. I think having the night to get their head right should help. I think they both have a solid draw the next two rounds, definitely both guys have 2 very winnable matches in front of them.
I didn't see anyone mention it here yet but Hamiti looks like a man on a mission to this point. That is a sick weight but I believe at his best he can beat anyone in it.
On paper Barnett's day gets easier with each match...
First match against # 7 seed.
Next match would be against #16 seed or #18 seed

Gomez has #13 seed first

Yea they both have solid paths to AA, but going to have to bring it right away this morning.

Then #22 seed or #28 seed.
Blood round would be probably #8 Lewan. Model lost 5-3 this year.
Still think we have a really good shot at Barnett, Gomez, Model, Hamiti, and Hillger all AAing.
Hillger will have to likely beat #8 seed from Iowa St in blood round to be an AA

That would be a rematch of the "shoe" match from earlier in the year went Trent had him beat and was holding on with the clock winding down and Schuyler's shoe came off and he got a last minute takedown. Schuler got spiked on his shoulder on a mat return by Davison last night so it will be interesting to see if he is healthy enough to get to the blood round.
It brings up something my son and I have been discussing since the big tens. Austin got called for a slam on a double when the opponent was in on a chest wrap but his arms were not trapped. However they never call a slam on a mat return. Davison was locked around Schuyler's arm and body and spiked him right on the shoulder of the trapped arm. No slam, Schuyler had to take injury time, Davison chose bottom and got out which basically made a close match not close. Two point swing in an 8/9 Hwt is a massive swing.

In all honesty Noto's path to AA is shorter than Barnett's (1 win vs 3) but not necessary easier. After Lee techs him he will likely meet Mckee or DeAugustino in the bloodround. Thinking Mckee. The consolation rounds of the NCAA's are his happy place. He has only lost 1 consolation match in the NCAA's in his career and that was to Vito.

I thought Gomez best chance to make the stand was beat Parco and make a run to the Semis. With the knees and probably not being in the best shape, I was worried he'd MFF if he lost on the front side. Really hope that's not the case.
He looked pretty good, but that backside is about mentality. We'll learn a lot about Gomez here...IMO.
Of course, maybe he's got a partially torn ACL and a MFF would be the best thing for him. I don't buy it, but...possible.
THAT IS THE WAY TO START THE DAY MR. BARNETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boom!
Barnett pinned his kid too quickly. I demand a rematch so I can watch it
I'm a badger fan and always will be! I'm super excited to see how Barnett, Hamiti, and Hilger finish. However, will the constant underachievements from our team makes me wonder if Bono is doing the job. The guys aren't mentally ready to wrestle and seem like they lack fundamentals/development. Guys have not gotten any better after they have come here, I know Division 1 is tough but being average in the Big 10 stinks. We beat the #2 Cornell team earlier in the year and look how they got better but we haven't. Barry Davis got fired for doing better......ridiculous. Maybe we should be asking who can take the program to the next level??? Ben Askren can turn the program around! He proves time and time again he can develop/create amazing college wrestlers. I'm sure he knows how to recruit too ;)

Well Hamiti was a Bono recruit, other than that, It is certainly fair to cast some shade towards them. I do not see that our lighter weights have progressed or improved much with the change out of the asst coach.
I think its time to put some measurable standards in place by our staff and towards our staff.

100%! Bono got lucky at SDSU with Gross. He has had some decent talent come in and hasn't done anything with it. If anything he just inappropriate term17 the bed on the big stage. The Ben Askren claim is so valid. Imagine if the AWA guys came to Wisconsin! We would be in the hunt for a team title right now. Get rid of Bono's sorry inappropriate term2 and bring in Funky to flip the Mirasolas and all the future Mizzou recruits build these guys up to compete on the big stage.

Then you don't read much. This argument has gone on for a while.
Ben Askren is a walking, talking, breathing NCAA compliance issue, owning most of the wrestling clubs in the state, unless the NCAA bylaws have changed recently.
It's a shame that the two gigantic egos involved can't get along, because I do believe that Ben would be great for the RTC. He changed wrestling with his style almost 20 years ago. Can he continue to evolve and change? Because that style of wrestling is no longer innovative. Everyone is putting those pieces into their game. He'd have to change again. He's smart enough to know that.
Imagine being Chris McIntosh, firing Bono, who makes no waves, and then switching over to Ben Askren, who never met a microphone he didn't want to speak into. He'd have to change that too, to be a successful head coach.
We want nice things, but we don't want to look in the mirror and say that we are part of the problem. Programs like Iowa and Penn State are sitting on piles of money. Wisconsin is sitting on the pile of change your grandma gives you as a Christmas present as a kid. Until that changes, we will have limited success at UW.
Money was a problem and now it is a HUGE problem when it comes to NIL money.
Wrestling monopolies are slowly diminishing the sport! It's the Walmart effect, which is to come into town and decimate all surrounding businesses and be the one stop shop! The top 5 schools get the best and everyone else gets what's left! Penn State is so good that they really don't have to fight for recruits! And that proves they are becoming a monopoly. In time how many programs are going to be around as they lose fans and facility support! I read a lot of the comments over the years about UW staying stagnant. More has to be done with instilling kids with the thoughts of being successful anywhere they go! And collectively as a group constantly be in the ears of elite kids telling them Wisconsin can be a place they can win. Be like Andrew Allirez and win where you are at! Also stop feeding Ben Askren's ego could help!
Look at what Cornell and Princeton do without being able to give out athletic scholarships plus academic requirements. Thus they are not limited at all to 9.9 athletic scholarships. Finding academic scholarship money and NIL money put them ahead or at least even with schools like UW in terms of resources.
Truth is teams with the best donors are going to be the most successful

I would bet Penn St backups are getting more money than some of our starting lineup
Quote from: DocWrestling on March 19, 2023, 02:42:14 PMI would bet Penn St backups are getting more money than some of our starting lineup
I would take the other side of the bet. Plenty of PA high school studs will take less money to wrestle for Penn State, plus Penn State tries harder than most to get its recruits on academic scholarships and other financial aid. One of the problems with Wisconsin not being able to recruit well is that top schools usually get a in-state discount as tuition is less for in-state recruits and offer a smaller scholarship. All those out of state recruits are probably tying up a lot of scholly money for the Badgers. I think a top five program is a pipe dream unless Bono can recruit the state better and land more elite recruits. Sorry to be negative, but I don't think the recruiting has been good enough post-Hamiti to even have much chance of being a top ten program, much less a top five podium team. If Badgers can land Davino and Hopke, I'll change my tune.
