BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– The Maryland Terrapins are in town for Indiana Wrestling's second home dual of the season. The meet will start at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21 at Wilkinson Hall.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS:
•       The Hoosiers will host Big Ten foe Maryland (5-5, 0-1) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21 at Wilkinson Hall.
•       Maryland is coming off competing in the Virginia Duals where they beat Kent State and Chattanooga and lost to South Dakota State and Oklahoma.
•       Their one Big Ten dual thus far was a loss to No. 1 Penn State.
•       Maryland has three wrestlers who are nationally ranked by InterMat, all three are in the heaviest weight classes. The Terrapins have Kyle Cochran (184) at No. 12, Jaron Smith (197) at No. 32 and Zach Schrader listed at No. 31.
•       Cochran, Smith, and Schrader share a combined 43-15 record, led by Cochran's 17-2 mark on the season.

LOOKING BACK AT MICHIGAN STATE:
•       In its closest dual of the season, Indiana fell just short to Michigan State on Monday, losing 15-17.
•       The Hoosiers and Spartans split on the day with each team winning five bouts.
•       Brock Hudkins (133), Cayden Rooks (141), Graham Rooks (149), Nick South (174), and DJ Washington (184) all finished in the win column for the day.
•       Almost each of IU's winners won a defensive battle as G. Rooks' win on an 8-4 decision was the largest margin of victory of any of IU's five winners.
•       Hudkins, C. Rooks, South, and Washington each won by a margin of three or loss.
•       Hudkins and South's wins were both dramatic as could be.
•       Hudkins came back in the third period and earned a takedown in the final minute to break a 3-3 tie and earn the win.
•       South owned a narrow 2-1 victory, earning one point for an escape in the second period of sudden victory which would be the final determinant.

TRENDING UP:
•       Like he missed no time at all, Nick South (174) made his first apperance since Dec. 11. in his 2-1 victory.
•       Cayden Rooks (141) has won two duals in a row to improve to 11-4 on the year.
•       Brock Hudkins (133) and D.J.Washington (184) earned the Hoosiers two ranked victories, as the duo beat the No. 11 and No. 29 ranked wrestler at their respective weight classes.
•       C. Rooks, Hudkins, and Washington own a combined 30-6 record this season.

TRIO OF HOOSIERS RANKED:
•       In the latest InterMat rankings, Indiana had three wrestlers ranked.
•       Graduate student Brock Hudkins (133) rose seven spots to No. 11 after his ranked victory against Michigan State's formerly No. 11 Ravyon Foley.
•       Redshirt sophomore D.J. Washington (184) and junior Cayden Rooks (141) stayed at No. 8 and No. 30, respectively.

STILL PERFECT:
•       Hudkins' win on Monday put him at 8-0 on the season while going 6-0 in duals.

Joe won 6-4.  Almost rode the Terp out for the entire 3rd after an early take down.  Almost gave up a reversal on a switch with 20 seconds left.   Only gave up one, then a rushed shot and Zargo defended for a TD and 6-4 win.

Zargo has a knack for shooting without shooting.   Just reaches for the back knee. Hit a double that way.

McNally with the pin near the end of 3.  Was down 2-1, but the Terp had a stall warning against him and McNally countered a weak shot.   McNally stayed aggressive throughout the 3rd.

Wrestled through an injury.  Impressive.

Great showing by UW against a pretty weak team. Weiler was the highlight for me. Back to back majors over top 25 guys. Definitely should help with seeding and potentially an at large berth if he is unable to wrestle his way in.

That's what they used to say about women's volleyball and the football team before Alvarez.  If the wrestling team wins a few Big and NCAA titles like Iowa and Penn State you will see a whole new fieldhouse experience in my opinion.  One of my high school classmates was on the women's volleyball team back in the day and it was nothing like it is now.

He was pretty sore after his last match.  Go re-watch the ending.  I think a week off right now for him was to just give him a chance to rest up midway through the season.  You could see him jumping around in the background during one of the matches last night so I think this is just resting up some nagging injuries.

His knee has been regularly bothering him and I imagine this was the perfect time to give him some rest. It looked really bad at the matmen on the first day but he was back okay for the second and he has been icing it after every match. It looked pretty bad again at Purdue so I am sure he just need it to calm down.  It does not appear to be a torn ligament based on his recovery. I thought maybe torn Mencius (I have a little personal experience with that) but it may actually be knee bursitis.

Badgers looked awesome Friday. There were more WI fans at the match than Terps fans.  Great to meet Mr. Weiler and sit next to Mr. Zargo. Braxton also had some fans come in from WV.  During every match you could see the Badgers get stronger while the Terps faded. Our conditioning looked great!  This team is getting stronger every week!

Did you get any feel for why the didn't shake hands at the end of the match?  The broadcast sort of showed the Maryland team looking over at the Wisconsin bench and then it looked like someone gave the sign to head to the locker room.

100%
Caffey is currently undefeated in conference duals with wins over Dean, Bulsak, Penola and Jordan but he had 4 losses on the season including a loss to Penn States backup Michael Beard (Scuffle) and a loss to Illinois Wroblewski (Michigan St Open) who is 4-4 and ranked 22nd on Flo but #54 on wrestlestat. Literally every 97 except for probably Willham of Indiana could finish in the top 6 in the Big Ten tournament. Very curious to see how many allocations there will be at that weight.

Did you get any feel for why the didn't shake hands at the end of the match?  The broadcast sort of showed the Maryland team looking over at the Wisconsin bench and then it looked like someone gave the sign to head to the locker room.

Not sure, but Maryland is nuts about covid and the Maryland coaches wore their masks over the nose the entire dual.
