Title: 6th match exception for Challenge Series needed and justified
Post by: Thats2 on January 10, 2022, 08:55:24 AM
Challenge Series "JV Regionals" - (Great event)
Each yr we run into a situation where a kid wins 4 matches on the consolation side of the bracket after an early loss and meets the 5 match max per day limit and is done wrestling at that point.  Multiple kids in the our "Regional" could not wrestle their placement match.
Unfortunately the way the rules are written, this is taking away opportunities from a positive event / experience and causing frustration amongst the wrestling community.  We need to find a way to let the kids wrestle and decide their final placement on the mat.

Why does it matter?
Unseeded Tournament and sometimes large brackets (28 in this case)
Alternates frequently make it in to the Challenge Series - Final placement decides it all
Great experience for Varsity Reserve to be center stage - Why diminish that?
A more "fair" way to help kids advance to "JV State"
Make a great Series - Even better.....

The rules have been changed to add a 6th match if it is a WIAA State Series event.  Being the Challenge Series is not a WIAA event, that provision does not apply.   As a community, we need to ask the WIAA to allow the exception for this Series as well.  Coaches Association maybe?

Thoughts?

Agree

And beyond that, since brackets are not seeded, I would advocate for wrestle backs to 3rd.

If seeding isn't done at the very least a seeding criteria should be taken into account.
