No. 17 Purdue Wrestling Set for No. 22 Michigan State
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 17 Purdue wrestling team takes its final road trip of the regular season this week, heading to Michigan State for a Friday night clash with the 22nd-ranked Spartans at Jenison Field House. Friday's dual is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will air live on BTN+.
PURDUE LINEUP & RANKINGS
The Boilermakers moved up one spot on the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, moving to No. 17 in the country, and hold various other rankings in both tournament and dual polls. Seven of the 10 Purdue starters are ranked nationally, including top-10 marks for Devin Schroder, Griffin Parriott and Kendall Coleman.

LAST TIME OUT
Purdue lost to No. 1 Iowa and No. 11 Ohio State at Holloway Gymnasium, but managed to get four of the 10 matches in each dual. Schroder and Coleman both went 2-0 on the day, while freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis picked up his first career fall and senior Max Lyon put up his second top-10 win of the season with a 6-1 upset of No. 8 Nelson Brands. Other wins from the Boilermakers came from freshman Emil Soehnlen and sophomore Thomas Penola.
PURDUE NOTES
• Head coach Tony Ersland is in his seventh season at Purdue and is 58-50 in dual competition with the Boilermakers.
• Ersland wrestled for the University of Iowa from 1992-97, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament at 177, and competing on the highest scoring team at the NCAA Championships in history (170).
• Through seven duals and 70 varsity matches this season, 43 of Purdue's 70 opponents (.614) have held national rankings.
• Senior Devin Schroder climbed to No. 2 in the country at 125 pounds via The Open Mat, TrackWrestling and WIN Magazine last week. It marks the second straight season the Boilermakers have had an individual move to No. 2 in the country, following Christian Brunner at 197 in 2019-20.
• With 38 back points this season, Schroder has eclipsed the 400-career back point mark and ranks second in Purdue history. He surpassed Scott Hinkel in his season-opening win in 2021, and how trails only Jake Patacsil, who owns 803 all-time.
• With his 6-1 start to the season, sophomore Kendall Coleman is now 35-9 in his career and surpassed the 100-career takedown mark with his six-takedown effort at Illinois. He is one of the fastest Boilermakers in program history to 100 takedowns, hitting the mark in his 39th career match. Cashé Quiroga posted 124 takedowns in 40 matches as a freshman in 2009-10, while Jason Silverstein tallied 109 takedowns in 44 matches in 1998-99.
• Sophomore Thomas Penola is off to a 6-1 start at 197 pounds, returning to his natural weight after qualifying for the national championships at heavyweight in 2019-20. He is second on the team in takedowns and is tied for the team lead in dual team points schored this season.
• Senior Max Lyon's two wins this season have both come over top-10 ranked opponents. He opened his season with a bang at 184 pounds, knocking off No. 7 Zach Braunagel 4-3 at Huff Hall, and then topped Iowa's Nelson Brands on Sunday 6-1. All six of his opponents this season are currently ranked in the top-17 in the country.
• Freshman Jacob Rundell has wrestled a similarly rough schedule in his early Boilermaker career, with his four dual opponents ranked in the top-25 at 133 pounds. He was three seconds away from overtime against No. 23 Jordan Decatur of Ohio State, tying the score at the buzzer, but falling on 1:02 of riding time for the Buckeye sophomore.
• The Boilermakers will wear a commemorative sticker on their headgear in 2021, honoring the late Morgan J. Burke, who served as Purdue's Athletics Director for 23 years and passed away in 2020.
