It stands for calculus now.  Love that too.  I worried if I went Big E fan the kids would think I was popping ecstasy.

I thought the ride to Elkhart Lake was long back in the day.  Now it's an hour drive between the likes of Mishicot/Reedsville and the southern schools of CG/RL/Oz.  There's going to be some late nights after some of these dual meets.  Dual meets start at 7pm?
Title: Re: Year 1 Schedule
Post by: CLC FAN on October 28, 2015, 08:40:07 PM
Yep, duals start at 7 pm.  For us (Random Lake) these distances will be comparable to what we were traveling - we had Johnson Creek and Wrightstown on our schedule last year.  I'm excited for the new mixture - and to have a conference tournament format that's not a round robin!
Title: Re: Year 1 Schedule
Post by: Gutwrench on October 29, 2015, 09:02:05 AM
That's true.  I was just thinking conference dual meets, but I'm sure most teams were traveling a comparable distance for non conference meets.

It will be nice to see conference tourn. brackets full again.

I'm a little familiar with Mant. Luth., but not so much with Mishicot and Reedsville.  Can anybody offer some history for these teams?  Past studs, powerhouse teams, etc......

So D3 Team Sectional D champs since 2008:

2008: Random Lake
2009: Random Lake
2010: Oostburg
2011: Oostburg
2012: Random Lake
2013: Random Lake
2014: Random Lake
2015: Random Lake

So... yeah... big dual tomorrow night at Random Lake as... you guessed it... Oostburg comes to visit.

I see CGB is traveling to Wabeno for a tournament this Saturday, and I noticed that Coleman is there as well.  Add that to their tough opening scramble at the Lomira Duals, and you've got one heck of a tough opening couple of weeks for the Rockets.

That would be Coleman reserves. But knowing how stacked Coleman is I would expect a few very solid wrestlers. Wabeno is a nice tournament for CG-B. Plenty of similar sized schools with a bunch of kids you don't normally see, except now Reedsville will be seen more often.

You're right about Lomira duals this year though. Lomira and Ripon were at another level and Kenosha Christian Life and Chilton/Hilbert were great match-ups for CG-B. The only breather was Oconomowoc reserves and they even had a couple good kids. No one came away undefeated on the day.

I was wondering if it was going to be the Coleman reserves.  Thanks for the clarification.

Still like you said, a nice tournament early in the year for CGB with teams you don't normally run into.

Make or break week in the Big East.  With the exception of the CG vs RL dual, the losing team in every matchup seems to be destined for bottom half of the conference, while the winning team is going to put themselves in the top half and still have a shot at the conference title.  In the CG vs RL dual, I think both the winner and the loser will still have a shot to sweep the rest of their conference duals and win the tournament - but obviously the winner has the inside track to the first Big East Conference Championship.

Predictions?
Title: Re: Year 1 Schedule
Post by: hasbeen on December 16, 2015, 03:47:10 PM
I don't really see any close duals this week. I'd say RL, Oost, EL-G, Reeds win easily. Some are saying CG-B has a chance Thurs night but there's just still too much of a gap there. RL is too strong at some of CG-B weakest weights so there will be a lot of 6's put up by the Rams. My prediction is 44-22.

I think some of the closest duals will be between Reedsville, Oost, EL-G. Reedsville and EL-G have tough kids but too many opens. Oost has full team but short on experience. Those three should be duking it out for 3rd in the Big E duals and the conference tourney.

Final score 44-17. I was pretty close on my prediction of 44-22. Luis over Brockman was the match of the night. I didn't have that one figured. In the end a fun dual last night. Glad it started at 220 to make the first half interesting and keep the crowd in it before we came up against the meat grinder that is 160-195 for RL. A dual like this gives CG-B an indication of how far they are from where they want to be, but also how far they've already come in the last few years.

Agreed on all counts.  Especially your predicting prowess!   Got any tips on horses for me?

I hope all of CG/B's crowd and parents and kids can see the progress they've made.  As a CG alum, I'm proud that RL vs CG was the dual for the Big East Title (in my opinion).  I hope it stays that way for a lot of years.

EL/HG wins the Kewaunee Invite!!  Great job Larry & the boys.  Ward and Trent Rebedew were champs while Troy Rebedew, Schorrer, and Roll were all finalists.  EL/HG won by 19.5 points!
Mishicot and Manitowoc Lutheran/Roncalli were also represented.  Elliot from Mishicot took home 1st, while Kiel taking runner up was the highlight for Manitowoc Lutheran/Roncalli.

Oostburg won its own invitational - lots of champs and runner-ups.  Brackets seemed pretty sparse.

Cedar Grove was 3rd at the Wikersham Invite.  I Brockmann and Gjertson were champs with Gonwa, Morgan, and Davies all taking home second.

Ozaukee struggled a bit at the Willard Schmidt Scramble, but Kraus taking 3rd was a highlight - as well as their brand-new heavyweight taking 6th.

Random Lake was up against it at the Marty Loy.  TONS of tough competition with Hudson, Sauk Prairie, Sheboygan Falls, Burlington, Lodi, etc...  H Vandenbush leads the way taking second, with Rautmann, Kohn, Brouillette, and H Huiras all placing top 7.  Team was 12th out of 24.

As a former wrestler in the conference. How does everyone feel with the conference change? It dwindled down in the mid to late 2000's.  It still seems like it is the same top teams. RL OZ and OO. but looking at it, I like Mishicot and  Reedsville in there. Hopefully those two teams (mishicot and Reedsville) can get back to their old habits and the conference could be back to the old tough CLC. Still fun to follow! good luck to ALL CLC...I Mean Big East grapplers over the Christmas holiday!

As a former CLC wrestler I see it as a GREAT change. We still have the same programs that have been in the CLC for the past several years and we added 3 additional teams. Everything runs in cycles. Mishicot graduated an incredible senior class last year. Hopefully they will get their program back to where it was and Reedsville's kids are tough as nails as usual. They just have numbers issues right now. Hopefully the Manitowoc Roncalli and Lutheran co-op can build up a program. To say that it is the same top teams isn't entirely accurate. While Random is still the cream of the crop Trevor and his guys have built up a great program in Cedar Grove. Their final score with Random was lopsided but most of the matches wrestled were close. That dual was tighter than the score indicated. Elkhart seems to have been continually improving the last few years and have filled more weights then in the past. They have a very young team. Hopefully they can continue to increase their numbers.Oostburg has great numbers and hopefully the coaching transition can continue on without skipping a beat. Ozaukee has been down the last 2-3 years which is attributed to a lack of numbers. They have a new head coach who is in the school system. I suspect that Coach Lubner has been doing some heavy recruiting. It will be great to see a real conference tournament again instead of a round robin tournament.

As a former wrestler in the CLC conference, I see the benefit of the conference change as it relates to the sport of wrestling.  However part of me wishes there wasn't a need to have all these schools added just to fill out a conference tournament.  My CLC exposure dates all the way back to the late 70's and early 80's.  There was Random Lake, Elkhart Lake, Ozaukee, Cedar Grove, Oostburg, Kohler, and Howards Grove (and I think Stockbridge even had a team in the conference way back in the day).  Sure a few teams still had some forfeits, but most teams were able to fill out a full lineup.  Now the conference as a whole has to expand just to have enough teams/wrestlers for a regular conference tourny.

It is what it is.  I am happy that administrations are still supporting wrestling by allowing co-ops.  I'm happy that there is still an opportunity to wrestle for those kids who chose to go out for this great sport.  Whether it's the CLC or the Big East I'm happy to follow the action, and I hope success to all those associated.

Cedar Grove, Oostburg, & Mishicot started off 2016 with the 17 team Rocket Scramble in Cedar Grove over the weekend. Another strong field again this year. CG-B finished in 5th place. And that was without the Brockmans (One with a sore knee, the other just a little heavy  :-\ ). Oostburg finished in 9th. Individuals in the top 6 were CG-B: 120 Gonwa 4-1 2nd, 138 Morgan 4-1 5th, 160 Davies 4-1 3rd, 195 Schoeder 2-3 4th, 285 Gjertsen 5-0 1st. Oost: 145 Frier 3-2 6th, 220 Vanderweele 3-2 3rd. Mish: 120 Becker 3-2 3rd, 160 Tesarik 4-1 2nd, 182 Elliot 2-3 4th.

The Rocket Scramble is always a good one for separating the men from the boys!  Can't believe they run it on Jan 2nd!!! Two tournaments over Christmas break for most of those teams - wow.

Looking forward, I think these are the biggest duals left:

Week 7
EL/HG @ Oostburg                 Thurs 1/14

Week 8
Oostburg @ Reedsville           Thurs 1/21

Week 9
Oostburg @ Cedar Grove        Tues 1/26
Reedsville @ EL/HG                Thurs 1/28

Looks like 2nd - 5th place will be decided by these duals.  Any predictions on which teams finish where?

CG-B should be able to top Oostburg for the first time in I don't know how long. Then I'd say Reedsville over Oost & EL-HG. They can pick up a lot of bonus points if they have all of their kids. Not sure where a couple have been the last few weeks...? Oost should be able to hang on for 4th place though.

Looks like its between CG-B and Oostburg for 2nd place. Maybe reedsville can sneak in points. Great to see Cedar grove belgium back in the conference! makes for a better tournament race.

Interested to see the conference tournament. I have not been following to close. who are the studs this year from the conference that can make some noise in sectionals and state? I know Random has a few any other Conference Studs that can make noise??

Reedsville has 6 wrestlers currently ranked or listed as honorable mention.  Oostburg has one.  Oostburg might have the numbers, but Reedsville has the horses.  I'll predict 36-24 Reedsville comes out on top.

Great prediction Gutwrench. so with the conference tourney coming up any precitions on conference champs? Obviously Random will run away with it.  However  it could be interesting with the next four teams with cedar grove, reedsville, Oostburg and Random. im interested to see who comes out in second.  Who does everyone have??

Ohio,
You may want to keep a look out for a few ELG/HG wrestlers as they defeated Oostburg two weeks ago in a dual meet 44-33. They have a very tough dual with Reedsville this Thursday to determine who finishes 3rd/4th in the conference and will have some Conference Champs in 2 weeks.

Just by context, I'm assuming Ohio Wisconsin meant to say Elkhart here.  That's the way I read it, anyway.  It would be crazy to talk about the top 5 teams and not have EL/HG in that discussion.  Could be pretty evenly spread amongst Random Lake, Cedar Grove, Reedsville, and Elkhart Lake/Howards Grove as far as champs go.  Every team seems to have 2-3 "locks" followed by the possibility of 3 or more other champs if they wrestle well.

Well I underestimated EL/HG on this one. Nice victory for them over Oostburg. I stick with my earlier prediction of Reedsville finishing in 3rd place though. Thursday night will decide that. It should be about 11 on 11 from the lineups I've been seeing from the two lately. Depending how they move kids around there should be about 9 matches and I see Reedsville winning 6. Should be about a 20 point win.

Reedsville will give CG-B a run for 2nd place at the conference tournament in a couple weeks...

It is great to see the depth that C.G. has. They have done a great job of building their program up.  In regards to conference duals it was a 2 team race this season between Random and Cedar. No one came close to either team and Random defeated Cedar by a healthy margin with some very close matches that could have gone the other way. Conference tournament will be exciting.
Title: Re: Year 1 Schedule
Post by: hasbeen on January 28, 2016, 09:54:19 AM
I agree. The tournament should be exciting. RL will most likely run away with it, but 2nd place will be a 3 way race. Reedsville will have a pile in the finals. If they can keep their open weights to no more than 3 I think they should be able to overtake CG for 2nd. The Rockets might still be without Isaac Brockman who is out with a knee injury. That is a big blow to their chances, but as CLC commented they do at least have a back-up at 132 to earn some points. EL/HG will most likely have a couple champs and have added some depth since the beginning of the year. They'll need a few of their kids to come through with 3rds instead of 4ths to give them a chance at 2nd as a team.
I'm looking forward to it. I only wish all this discussion was about a 3 way race for 1st instead of 2nd. That would make it even more fun. We're getting there...

EL/HG downs Reedsville 39-35.  Based on trackwrestling, it seems like a pretty entertaining dual, with EL/HG making up an 8 point deficit in the last 2 matches.  Reedsville did win 4 of 7 wrestled matches - and they seem to be without Marie Wedepohl and Brandon Stelzer.

No matter what - a great win for Elkhart.
Title: Re: Year 1 Schedule

Wow. I counted EL/HG out twice now and was way wrong both times! My Oostburg prediction was just a stab in the dark without actually even looking at the matchups, but this one I kinda thought I had figured out. RD may have won with Stelzer in the line-up, but no where near the 20 pts I predicted. I didn't see the win by Roll at 285 coming. I had a pin figured the other way. Great job EL/HG. Nice to see the turn-around in the new conference this year. RL still on top, but CG-B and EL/HG taking the next 2 spots in the dual season.

Being the first year in this conference I am very surprised by the quality of the teams top to bottom.  Out of Random Lake, Cedar Grove, Reedsville, Elkarte Lake, and Oosturg, those 5 teams have quality teams that make all the dual meets this year hard to predict.  Should be a fun Conference tourney to watch on Saturday.  And with the quality, we won't see complete domination by one team which is a welcome sight, coming from the Olympian in which Wrightstown wins just about every year.

I'd say you are short-changing Trent Rebedew a bit... though I'm not sure what weight he lands at... 138?  145?  I also think that Jonah Frier may crack through for Oostburg to have a champ.

I'm looking forward to a lot of the rematches of some close ones...
132 Brockman and Luis (1 point match)
138 Just about everybody won or lost close
152 Roffers and Kohn (1 point)
195 Griffey and Huiras (Double OT)
220 Drenski and Knier (Back and forth match)
285 Gjertson and Hiller (2 point match; then a 1 point match)

I agree with Rebedew at 138 and Frier at 145. Although that's why you do predictions right? If you just pick the top seed at each weight that would be no fun.
