AMES, Iowa - Fourteen Hoosiers travelled to Ames, Iowa today to take on the Harold Nichols Open. For nine of them, this was their first action of the season. Indiana finished the day with four wrestlers on the podium.
In his first bout of the day, redshirt senior Taylor Walsh earned a pin in 1:42 to become the all-time leader in career pins at Indiana with 48. He followed up his record setting pin with three more in as many matches to advance to the championship. Although he did not earn a fifth fall on the day, Walsh defeated England of Missouri 16-4 in a major decision. Walsh is now 5-0 on the season with a career pin total of 51.
Redshirt Sophomore Nate Jackson came close to giving Indiana two Harold Nichols champs, when he was defeated in a 5-3 decision in the championship bout. Jackson ended his day and the first event of the season 4-1.
Senior Luke Sheridan went 4-2 for the tournament to obtain a fourth place finish. He added three pins to bring his career total to 24, his last of which was in 21 seconds. Fellow wrestler redshirt shopomore Matt Irick had a similar day, also finsihing fourth and had a record of 5-2. Irick completed his day with two pins.
On the day, there were four other Hoosiers who finished with multiple wins. Sophomore Sean Brown (141) won back-to-back bouts after dropping his first to end 2-2. Also winning two bouts was sophomore Luke Blanton (157), who earned a fall early in the day, with a second period pin of Iowa Western's Gray. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Moody (149) won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals where he was defeated in a major decision. Moody wrapped-up the open at 3-2. Redshirt junior Garret Goldman (HWT) lost his first match-up of the day, but won three consecutive bouts by decision (7-3, 2-0, 2-0) in the consolation bracket to finish 3-2.

Indiana Signs Five Future Hoosiers for 2015-16

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - By sumbmitting their National Letters of Intent, five future student-athletes have signed to be members of the Hoosier Wrestling program starting with the 2015-16 season. Between them, the five wrestlers have seven state championships, three top five finishes at Flonationals and a Fargo Jr. National Champion.

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Hoosiers left Philadelphia with two Keystone Classic champions -- redshirt senior Taylor Walsh (165) and redshirt sopomore Nate Jackson (174) were undefeated on the day. Walsh also brought home Oustanding Wrestler and most falls (four) for the classic.
Walsh entered the day with 99 career wins at Indiana, so after a first round pin in just 49 seconds, he joined the 100 win club. He added to his all-time IU leading pin record by reeling off three falls in as many bouts. In the semifinals, Walsh, who is ranked 12th in the 165 pound weight class, was matched-up against 14th ranked Wilson (Stanford). To earn his only decision of the season, Walsh won 5-1 to advance to the championship bout against fourth ranked Harger (Northwestern). Staying true to form, Walsh defeated Harger by pin in only 1 minute and 28 seconds to earn the Keystone Classic championship and a season record of 10-0 (8 pins).
In the 174 pound weight class, Nate Jackson added a second Keystone Classic championship for the Hoosiers. He did so by winning handily in all four of his matches. He outscored his opponents 41-19 in the first three rounds, earning major decisions in each bout. In the finals, Jackson faced 11th ranked Subjeck of Stanford, which he won with a 17-11 decsion. Jackson is now 8-1 on the year.
Indiana had two other podium finishers, senior Luke Sheridan (197) finished third place and redshirt sophomore Matt Irick (184) earned a fouth place. Sheridan was 4-1 with three pins. After losing in the semifinals to tenth ranked Bonaccorsi (Pittsburgh), Sheridan wrestled back to pin his last two competitors. The senior is now 8-3 has six pins on the year, all of which have come under 2 minutes.
Irick had a busy day, wrestling seven matches and going 5-2. He earned a pin in the second round before dropping his quarterfinal matchup. In the consolation bracket, Irick lost a tough decision 4-1 in the third place bout. He is now 10-4 with three pins in the 2014-15 season.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Redshirt Senior Taylor Walsh was named the Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of November 25. This is his second time winning the award (Nov. 5, 2013). Walsh, who was ranked 12th heading into the Keystone Classic this past weekend in Philadelphia, Penn., earned his 100th career win with a 49-second pin of Colton Jackson from Appalachian State.
The Cherry Hill, N.J. native was undefeated in the tournament, winning four of his five bouts by pin. Walsh defeated 14th ranked Jim Wilson of Stanford in the semifinals with a 5-1 decsion. The senior pinned 4th ranked Pierce Harger of Northwestern in 1:28 to win the Keystone Classic Championship and bring home the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
As voted on by students and Indiana fans, Walsh was also named the #GoIU Student-Athlete of the Week.
With his accomplishments this weekend, Walsh moved from 12th to 6th in the WIN Wrestling Magazine rankings for the 165-pound weight class (7th in InterMat rankings). He is undefeated on the season with a 10-0 record and eight pins.

Two Podium Spots for the Hoosiers at CKLV Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Indiana travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitaional this weekend. The Hoosiers came away with two podium finishes -- redshirt senior Taylor Walsh (165), second place and senior Luke Sheridan (197). As a team, Indiana finished in 12th with 51.5 points.
Taylor Walsh defeated 15th ranked Nicholas Wanzek (Minnesota) and third ranked Michael Moreno (Iowa State) en route to the championship bout. In the final match, Walsh lost in a close 4-2 decescion to the number two nationally ranked. This loss is the first of the season for the seventh ranked wrestler in the 165 pound weight class. Walsh is now 14-1 on the season with 11 pins.
In the 197 pound weight class, Sheridan finished his weekend 4-2 and earned a seventh place spot on the podium. On the season, Sheridan is now 12-5 with nine pins.
Indiana has it's first dual meet of the year in Madison, Wisconsin against the University of Wisconsin, December 11(7 pm).

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -Coming off of a loss to Wisconsin, the Hoosiers made a great turn around, defeating SIUE 28-12 and Manchester 47-6. IU won 16 of the 18 matches that they entered a wrestler. In dual meets on the season, Indiana is now 2-1.
"I like the way we rebounded after a tough loss to Wisconsin. We wrestled with intensity," said head coach Duane Goldman. "Hopefully we can build on that and continue to wrestle the same way in upcoming matches."
In the match against SIUE, redshirt senior Taylor Walsh and sophomore Jake Masengale both recorded pins. Five other Hoosiers earned victories -- four by decision and one by major decision. Indiana dominate the match versus Manchester with five pins and two tech falls. The only team points that Manchester scored were due to the forfeit of the 125-pound class by IU.
In the 133-pound weight class, sophomore Chris Caton defeated Patrick Myers (SIUE) and Chase Wilson (MAN). In his bout against Wilson, Caton earned the quickest pin of the day in only 30 seconds. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Moody was a point scoring machine, winning 11-7 against Karsten Van Velsor (SIUE) and with a 15-0 tech fall against Josh Juarez (MAN)
Redshirt freshman Luke Blanton went 2-0 on the day with a 13-4 major decision in his match verses SIUE's Erik Traveras and a pin in 1:39 versus Manchester's Bryce Roberts. Joining Caton, Moody and Blanton at 2-0 on the day are Walsh, Nate Jackson, Jake Masengale and Luke Sheridan.
Third ranked Taylor Walsh added two more pins to his tally, bringing his season total to 13 and his career total to 60. In a tough bout against Jake Residori (SIUE), 16th ranked Nate Jackson won on a 4-3 decision. Jackson followed that with dominating 12-4 major decision.
Taylor Walsh isn't the only Hoosier who can rack up the pins, as Jake Masengale also pinned two on the day. The first came in 3:14 versus Derek Nagel (SIUE), the second in 4:46 against Alex Roberts (MAN).
Senior Luke Sheridan duplicated his result from Manchester last season with a first round pin. Sheridan won a hard fought bout against Matthew McCliments with a 2-0 decision.
The Hoosiers next match is against Cleveland State, one week from today on December 20 at 1 pm (Cleveland, Ohio).

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three Hoosiers come away from Saturday's match with victories against Cleveland State. Taylor Walsh, Nate Jackson and Luke Sheridan were succesfull indivually, but the Vikings won six bouts (and a forfeit) to take the win, 24-13. Four of Cleveland State's six wins were by two or less points.
Walsh got Indiana on the board with a pin of Matt Donohoe in the 165-pound bout. He jumped out to 16-2 lead before putting the match away. With his 14th pin of the season, Walsh has already moved into the top ten single-season list at Indiana. The redshirt senior is tied for ninth with Angel Escobedo (2007) and Roger Chandler (1997).
Redshirt sophomore Nate Jackson earns his sixth major decision of the year. His 16-7 win gives him a dual match point differential of plus-18 in only three matches. Jackson is now 14-3 on the season overall and 3-0 in dual match bouts.
Luke Sheridan defeated Kanez Omar in the 197-pound match with a 3-2 decision. The victory gives the senior his 15th win of the season and 81st of his career.
Indiana will take part in the 52nd Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Competition begins Dec. 29 and will conclude on Dec. 30.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -The Hoosiers and number four ranked Taylor Walsh (165 lbs) will travel to Evanston, Illinois to compete in the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern University. Competion will start on Monday , Dec. 29 and will be completed on Tuesday, Dec. 30. Monday will be covered on BTN Plus beginning at 10:30 am. Session two of day one will start at 8 pm. Session three starts at 1pm on Tuesday morning (also aired on BTN Plus). The championship rounds will air on BTN at 8 pm on Tuesday evening. Indiana will be participating in the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship. Three Hoosiers are seeded -- Taylor Walsh (165 lbs) is No. 2, Nate Jackson (174 lbs) is No. 8 and Luke Sheridan (197 lbs) is No. 9.

Redshirt senior Taylor Walsh is continuting his impressive pinning ways. After leading the country last season with 26 pins, Walsh is already well on his way with 14 pins this season. That brings his career total ro 61, which is the most in IU history.
With 111 career wins, Walsh needs three more to break into the top-ten list in Indiana history. Tied for ninth with 114 are Joe Dubuque (2002-06) and Sam Komar (1975-78).
This season Walsh became Indiana's all-time pin leader. At the end of the 2013-14 season, Walsh was tied with Viktor Sveda (1999-2002) with 47 pins. In his first bout of this season, Walsh captured the record and is only expanding his lead in the record books.
SHER SOME LOVE, TAYLOR
Luke Sheridan has joined teammate Taylor Walsh in the top-ten all-time pins list. Sheridan is currently in a tie for tenth will 31 career pins.
The senior has 10 pins thus far in the 2014-15 season. He only needs four more to jump into the top-ten single-season pins list.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION
Nate Jackson is having an outstanding sophomore (redshirt) season -- he has only lost three matches out of 17.
In three dual bouts (3-0), he has outscored his opponents 32-14, a plus-18 differential. In nearly half of Jackson's victories (6-of-14), he has won by major decision.
In the national rankings, he is ranked as high as No. 14 (WIN Magazine) for the 174-pound weight class. He is also ranked 18th (The Open Mat) and 19th (InterMat).

EVANSTON, Ill.- At the end of the day one, Taylor Walshis the lone Hoosier to remain in championship contention, as he advanced to the semi-finals. Two other Hoosiers -- Nate Jackson and Garret Goldman -- are still able to earn a podium spot through the consolation bracket.
Walsh made quick work of the field by pinning his first two opponents in under two minutes. His two pins bring his season total to 16, which puts him in a tie for fourth on the single-season Indiana list (the redshirt senior holds the school record with 26, set last season). In his quarterfinal match-up, Walsh won a rather uneventful bout in a 3-0 decision over eighth seeded Jonathan Schleifer (Princeton). Walsh will face the 12th nationally-ranked wrestler in the 165-pound weight class, Jackson Morse (Illinois).
Redshirt sophomore Nate Jackson also advanced to the quarterfinals. He added yet another major decision to his total for the season with a 17-7 victory against Ben Hass. Up to that point, Jackson had outscored his opponents 45-18 in his past three bouts dating back to the December 13 match against Manchester's Dylan Lauffer. After defeating 12th seeded Ryan Wolfe (Rider) in an 11-7 decision, the 174-pounder lost a tough match verses the number four seed Brock Gutches, 4-2. He will match-up with David Kocer (South Dakota State) in the consolation bracket tomorrow morning.
Heavyweight Garret Goldman wrestled well for day one to earn a 3-1 record. He took down 12-seed Chris Lopez (Illinois) with a 5-2 decision in the first round. Against nationally ranked (13th) Evan Knutson, Goldman lost a hard-fought match 2-0. But in the wrestle backs, Goldman won two straight beating two Big Ten opponents -- Tyler Kral (Purdue) and Brooks Black (Illinois). The redshirt junior wrestles Dawson Peck in the first session tomorrow.
Luke Sheridan went 2-2 on the day with victories against Vincent Pickett (Edinboro) and Jack Carda (Air Force). In both of Sheridan's losses, it came down to the wire. In his third round bout, Sheridan and the eight seed, Jared Haught, were tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation. There was no score in the sudden victory period, but early in the first 30-second period, Haught got a takedown. Sheridan couldn't escape in the second 30-second period and thus did not advance. In his first consolation match, the senior took on four seed Patrick Downey of Iowa Central; Sheridan lost on a 3-2 decision.
Unattached freshman Jake Danishek had a good showing, going 3-2. In the three matches he won, Danishek outscored his opponents 46-12, earneing a technical fall and a major decision. Alex Gregoryfinished the day with two victories, defeating Grant Nehring (North Dakota State) and Brooks Marino (Penn). Gregory came close to advancing in consolation after losing 2-1 in a tiebreak.

EVANSTON, Ill.- Indiana had two wrestlers place at the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. Taylor Walsh dominated the field to win the 165-pound championship (pinning four of five), while Nate Jacksonearned eighth place after a strong 3-3 showing in the 174-pound class.
Walsh made quick work of the field by pinning his first two opponents in under two minutes. In his quarterfinal match-up, Walsh won a rather uneventful bout in a 3-0 decision over eighth seeded Jonathan Schleifer (Princeton). For day two, Walsh kept up his pinning ways with a 47 second pin of the 12th nationally-ranked wrestler in the 165-pound class, Jackson Morse (Illinois).
In the championship bout, Walsh fell behind early 4-1 after two takedowns by Harger (Northwestern). An escape to end the first period and another to start the second but Walsh down 4-3. He didn't wast much time from there, pinning the eighth nationally-ranked 165-pound wrestler in 4:06. Along with the championship, Walsh took home Most Falls Award, High Points Award and the Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.
With the four pins for the tournament, Walsh now has 18 on the season. This puts him in a tie for third with now volunteer assistant Kurt Kinser (2008) on the Indiana single season list (Walsh holds the record with 26 set last season). The redshirt senior now has 116 career wins, which puts him in eighth on the all-time Indiana list.

Saturday marks the 14th time the Hoosiers and Nittany Lions (13th as B1G foes) will face each other in a dual meet. Penn State leads the all-time series 12-0-1. The first meeting occured in 1970-- Penn State won 23-13. The only time IU has not lost to Penn State in a dual match was in 2009 when the two schools tied, 17-17. Penn State has eight wrestlers ranked in the top-20 (InterMat), six of whom are in the top-10.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Indiana falls to 2-3 in dual meets on the year and 0-2 in the Big Ten after a 42-3 loss at Penn State. Redshirt senior Taylor Walsh came away with the Hoosiers sole victory.
Walsh won the 165-pound bout with a 9-6 decision. After the first period, Walsh led 5-2 after a couple of takedowns and an escape. Following a scoreless second period, Hammond kept it close with two takedowns in the third to trail 7-6. Walsh earned the victory and moved to 23-2 on the year after an escape and a bonus point for riding time.
Senior Luke Sheridan kept it close, but fell short of the fourth ranked 197-pounder by way of 6-3 decision. In another close bout, Alex Gregory lost in a low scoring battle, 2-0 to the eighth ranked wrestler in the 157-pound class, Dylan Alton. Alton earned his two points on an escape and a bonus point for riding time.
The Hoosiers head back home to take on ninth ranked Illinois in the University Gymnasium this Sunday (Jan. 11) at 1 pm.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers remain winless in Big Ten competion after falling to ninth ranked Illinois, 36-3. Just as in Friday's match with Penn State, Taylor Walsh was the lone victory for Indiana.
After pinning No. 8 Jackson Morse in the Midlands semifinal two weeks ago, Walsh had chance to add another fall to his total. This time, though, Morse battled hard and even led 2-0 in the second period. But after a quick escape following Morse's takedown and another to start the third, Walsh tied the bout at two. The redhsirt senior finished off Morse for the second time this season with a takedown late in the final period. Walsh improves to 24-2 (18 pins) on the season.
Similarly to when the two matched up in the Midlands consolation matches, Garret Goldman and Brooks Black need extra time to settle the bout. The two heavyweights went into the over time period tied 1-1 and the score remained the same after the first one minute period. Goldman could not repeat his Midlands result against Black, however. Black escaped in under 10 seconds and rode out in the second riding time period to seal the victory.
The Hoosiers are home again next weekend as they take on the Wildcats of Northwestern in the University Gymnasium on Sunday (Jan. 18) at 1 pm.

NORTHWESTERN SERIES
Sunday marks the 81st time the Hoosiers and Wildcats will face each other in a dual meet. Indiana leads the series 45-31-4. The first meeting in the series dates back to 1923, when Indiana defeated Northwestern 16-9. Indiana won the first six meetings and didn't lose for the first 18 matches (17-0-1). Although the series started heavily in IU's favor, Northwestern has won the last four matches.
The Wildcats have five wrestlers ranked in at least one poll, while Jason Tsirtsis is ranked No. 1 in maojr polls. There will be one bout consisting of two ranked wrestlers -- #4/5 Taylor Walsh will take on #7/6 Pierce Harger. This marks the third time this season that the two grapplers have faced off. Walsh has been victorious on both accounts -- the most recent to was in the championshup bout of the Midlands Championship.

Redshirt senior Taylor Walsh is continuting his impressive pinning ways. After leading the country last season and settng an Indiana single-season school record with 26 pins, Walsh is already well on his way with 18 pins this season. With 18 pins on the year, Walsh is in a tie for third most in a Hoosier season and the NCAA leader for the 2014-15 season. He is tied with Kurt Kinser - 18 (2008) and only trails Rod Chamberlin - 19 (1981) and himself - 26 (2014).
After picking up five wins at the Midlands Championships, Walsh now has 118 career wins. This moved the 165-pounder into eighth place on the all-time Indiana wins list. He needs nine more to break into the top-five.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Northwestern earned it's first Big Ten win of the season against the Hoosier wrestlers, as Indiana fell 37-9. Indiana came away with two wins on the day. Luke Blanton won the 157-pound bout and Nate Jackson won at 174 pounds by forfeit.
Redshirt freshman Luke Blanton earned the Hoosiers three points and his first career Bg Ten victory with a 9-3 decition of Ben Sullivan. After a takedown early in the first period, Blanton led 2-0 to start the second. Blanton chose to start the second stanza down and escaped to go up 3-0 just a few seconds into period number two. A takedown by Sullivan and another escape by Blanton made the score 4-2 going into the final period. Blanton earned five points in the third, witha takedown, a two-point nearfall and a bonus point for riding time.
In the most anticipated match of the day, #4/5 Taylor Walsh could not replicate his two earlier performances against the seventh ranked Pierce Harger. In their first two meetings -- both championship matches (Keystone Classic and Midlands Championships) -- Walsh was victorious winning both by pin. Harger took control of the match in first and never really let go of it. The Wildcat 165-pounder nearly pinned Walsh on three different occasions and won by tech fall, 15-0.
The Hoosiers have two matches next week as they travel to Norwalk, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 23, 7 pm). Next Sunday (Jan. 25, 1pm) Indiana will be back in the U Gym for a match-up with Michigan.

OHIO STATE SERIES
Friday will be the 90th time the Hoosiers and Buckeyes have met in a dual meet. Ohio State leads the all-time series 50-37-2. In the last match, Ohio State won in Bloomington, 36-3. They have won the last six and 14 of the last 16. The first meeting between the two schools dates back to 1923, when Ohio State defeated Indiana 14-11.

NORWALK, Ohio -The Hoosiers had their best Big Ten showing of the year -- winning four of 10 matches -- yet the Hoosiers lost 31-13. Trevor Moody, Luke Blanton, Nate Jackson and Garret Goldman were all victorious.
Sophomore Nate Jackson took out a big lead in the first period with three takedowns to lead 6-2. He started the second period down and quickly earned an escape, followed by a takedown to lead 9-2. Jackson won by a 12-3 major decision over Dominic Prezzia. Heavyweight Garret Goldman earned his first Big Ten win of the year by defeating Ray Gordon 3-2.
Redshirt sophomore Trevor Moody trailed 2-0 early in the first after a Languis takedown, but earned an escape before the end of the period. Moody started the third period down and tied the bout at 2-2 after a second escape. the 149-pounder won the bout after getting the bouns point for riding time.
Luke Blanton won his second consecutive Big Ten bout after defeating Kyle Visconti. Blanton led in a close bout 6-5 going into the third period. A reversal, two takedowns and a bonus point for riding time gave Blanton the 13-7 win.
The Hoosiers are at home this Sunday, January 25 (1 pm) to take on the Wolverines of Michigan (University Gymnasium).

LINCOLN, Neb. - Indiana fell to the eighth ranked Cornhuskers on Sunday, 33-6. Hoosier wrestlers who left Lincoln with a victory are Taylor Walsh (165) and Nate Jackson (174).
Walsh matched-up with Austin Wilson in the 165-pound bout. After a scoreless first period, Walsh earned two escapes and takedown to take the lead 4-2 heading into the third period. That was how the score would finish after, just like the first period, neither wrestler scored a point in the third. Walsh now has 120 career victories to his name which puts him alone in seventh on the all-time Indiana list.
In the 174-pound match, Nate Jackson won on a 6-1 decision. In the first period, Jackson got a takedown and Wilbourn escaped to bring the score to 2-1. Jackson chose to start the second down and quickly earned an escape point. Before the second round was finished, the redshirt sophomore got his second takedown of the bout. The third period was scoreless and Jackson earned a bonus point for riding time.
The Hoosiers will be back home on Friday, February 13 to face Michigan State in the University Gymnasium (6 pm).
