One of the nation's best wrestling teams put on a dominating performance in Aberdeen Saturday.
Upper Iowa University, ranked seventh in NCAA Division II in the recent Basford Rankings, defeated Northern State 47-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual.
"We did pretty well overall," said Upper Iowa coach Heath Grimm. "We are young, but we are coming around. I liked our energy and attitude, but of course, you are never satisfied. It is a process all the way through the season."
Three matches came down to the final seconds:
• With 30 seconds left in the 133-pound match, Matt Paulus of Upper Iowa got the two-point reversal to win 8-6 over CJ Voegeli.
• Duane Richardson of Upper Iowa got the winning two-point takedown with 19 seconds in a 3-2 win over Ian Muirhead, who scored his final point on an escape with four seconds left.
• Dalton Westerlund of Upper Iowa secured his 5-2 win over Blake Lundgren with a takedown with nine seconds left.
Also in the heavyweight match, nationally ranked Logan Hopp of Upper Iowa jumped on NSU's Tony Reurink earlier with a double-digit lead and nearly pinned him. However, Reurink fought back to last the entire match, losing 20-9.
"I am disappointed because we are struggling as a team right now," said Northern coach Pat Timm. "We had some opportunities to get some wins tonight, but we did not make it happen. We need to make some changes in our practices and in how we compete. That is what it comes down to, because we are a better team than what we showed tonight."
NSU (3-7, 0-3 in the NSIC) will wrestle at Augustana Thursday in another conference dual. Upper Iowa (10-1-1, 2-0) will dual NSIC foe Southwest Minnesota State at 2 this afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.
