rankingcommittee

Good afternoon,

Glad to see that everyone is enjoying this set of rankings.    If people are talking about them, it's a great thing for wrestling.    8)

There is a website called www.rankwrestlers.com (which is a pay for service) that has wrestling rankings that takes data purely from matches in Trackwrestling.  So, as we show you this data, know that when we looked at it, there were many wrestlers that didn't have matches captured because A) they weren't entered or B)It flat ouy looks like they just didn't pull in for some reason. Our committee does not have this sophisticated type of system in terms of spitting out a rank number, but we essentially do the same thing by "hand," so to speak.

First off..this information is from their website and how they get their calculations:

RankWrestlers uses the data delivered by coaches to TrackWrestling's season results. The system is not fool-proof; if you see a mistake, please work through your coach to correct the information on TrackWrestling. We do not make manual adjustments on our system, as we feel that it is important to have the correct information in the TrackWrestling database.  Obviously not all wins / losses are equal, so just comparing a wrestler's win percentage does not give an accurate indication of their performance. RankWrestlers considers multiple factors when ranking the wrestlers. All wins and losses are adjusted according to the type of win and the quality of the opponent. The average of the three highest adjusted win percentages of opponents that the wrestler defeated is listed under the column "3 best." A column title "H2H" makes head-to-head adjustments for matches between closely ranked opponents. If a lower ranked wrestler that is within ten percent in the total ranking defeats a higher-ranked wrestler, then the higher-ranked wrestler's ranking is reduced by half the difference and the lower ranked wrestler is raised by half the difference to move the winner of the contest in front of the loser. It is possible to have multiple head-to-head adjustments, though, so a different head-to-head adjustment could possibly leave the losing wrestler in front of the winning wrestler from an earlier adjustment.

The adjusted win percentage and top 3 wins are averaged, and the head-to-head adjustments are applied to determine the total ranking. The ranking will make the biggest improvement when a wrestler defeats tougher opponents, and it will drop more with losses to opponents with lower win percentages. A wrestler's ranking will also change as opponents wrestle more matches, because the opponent's adjusted win percentage is continuously updated throughout the entire season (as their record becomes more indicative of their strength), and the new opponent win percentages are applied to the wrestler's earlier wins / losses.

So, with that being said, we took a look at their rankings and compared it to ours, just to see where everything panned out.  To the data ;D  The headings don't line up perfectly, so we apologize about that

Working on D2 and will post shortly.

Takedown Bro

Wow, to me this is great stuff IMO.  I think sometimes some wrestlers get lower ranking due to a tougher schedule then other or some wrestlers will bump up to wrestle a tougher opponent.

First and foremost, your committee does a great job IMHO.

Any model, index and/or ranking system will have minor degrees of error associated with the predetermined criteria built into the equation.  No system is perfect but most are useful.

To run a cross comparison of your rankings to a 3rd party model, only to have very similar results speaks volumes to the quality  result the committee obtains.

At the end of the day it all happens on the mat anyway, keep up the good work.

I for one really enjoy the rankings and so does my son. While I don't always agree with them they are enjoyable to look at and only enhances our sport. Keep up the great work!

In closing, we were 10/14 in D1,D2, and D3, (so 30/42 overall) compared to their model for the #1 ranked person.

Hope you enjoy this data as will continue to always look at every resource we can to make our rankings the best ones in the nation.

I had to look at D1 152 pounds, and chuckle a little..  who was bold??  ;D

You guys do a great job! Great to see the other data - quite frankly like the discussion it gets around the sport. At the end of the day it is settled on the mat. Thanks for putting these together - good for wrestling in Wisconsin!

Oh the uproar those ranking would create.

It is interesting that two lists with different missions end up so similar.

wiwrestling.com rankings are (I'd imagine) a search to find the top wrestlers at each weight in each division.

rw  rankings are who has compiled the most impressive season at each weight in each division.

Not quite the same thing.  If everyone knew Dan Gable was the #1 at his weight, but his school didn't go to many big tournaments and he always got FFs in duals, wiwrestling.com would likely have him as #1, and rw would likely not.

Like I said, it's cool that two different schools of thought do end up dovetailing as the season goes on.  It's a testament to how well-mixed our state is getting when it comes to competition.  There aren't as many isolationist pockets out there were a kid can go his whole season just beating up on the same geographic area.
